Dhananjaya de Silva steps down as Sri Lanka Test captain

Colombo, Oct 8: Dhananjaya de Silva has stepped down as Sri Lanka’s Test captain with immediate effect, ending his tenure in the role he took up in January 2024.

In a letter to Sri Lanka’s selection committee, de Silva said he believed the leadership should be handed over to the next generation. He confirmed that he would remain available for selection as a player.

Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva thanked the former captain for his contribution to the Test team and wished him well for the remainder of his career.

Dhananjaya de Silva led Sri Lanka in 18 Tests after succeeding Dimuth Karunaratne, guiding the team to seven victories.

During his captaincy, de Silva scored 1,130 runs at an average of 36.45 and claimed nine wickets at a bowling average of 44.44.
