Mangalore, Apr 19: The rain which lashed Karnataka coast on Wednesday April 18 evening inflicted damages in the form of tumbled electric poles and trees, damaged houses etc. Karkala taluk in particular experienced rain coupled with thunder and lightning, while Subrahmanya and some villages in Beltangady taluk reported hailstorm.

Over 20 electric poles got uprooted in Beltangady taluk, plunging a number of villages in darkness. The story was not different in Sullia taluk. Puttur, Bantwal and Mangalore taluks. The entire coastal stretch of Udupi district also received copious rain coupled with strong wind.

A few houses and business entities suffered losses on account of flying away of tiles from their roofs. A house belonging to Sundar Naik in Marne, Karkala, was damaged due to lighting. Power disruptions for several hours, and traffic bottlenecks were the order of the day in most areas.

The meteorological department has predicted rain coupled with lightning and thunder in the coast as well as northern and southern hinterlands during the next two days.

Water level at Tumbe vented dam, which supplies water to the city,  improved to 9.9 ft on Wednesday as against 9.8 ft the previous day. The efforts of the city corporation to bring water from Lakya dam to the city did not succeed on Wednesday as expected. The officials are hopeful of succeeding in their efforts in this direction on Thursday.
