Ajman, Apr 20: The proceedings of the Third Annual Scientific Meeting held in November 2011 at GMU, containing full papers of the oral and poster presentations has been selected to be one of the sources of the input of the Index Medicus for the World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean Region (IMEMR). IMEMR is a comprehensive bibliographic database of more than 120,000 citations and full text articles from 521 health and biomedical science journals from 19 countries in the region.
The research division of the Gulf Medical University (GMU) was established three years back to foster and nurture the research activities among its faculty and students in the different colleges of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, physical therapy and graduate studies.
The Research Division hopes to promote both short and long-term cooperation between scientists from within the country and abroad in collaborative research projects.
GMU’s commitment to the pursuit of new knowledge in the fields of medicine and allied health sciences and medical education has resulted in the conduct of five internally-funded and seven externally-funded research projects leading to 49 publications and 78 presentations in local and international forums in the past three years.
The Fourth Annual Scientific Meeting of GMU is scheduled in November 2012 at the Al- Jurf campus of GMU in Ajman, UAE. This annual event provides a forum for inter-disciplinary exchange of ideas among its members made up of clinicians, academicians, biomedical
scientists and students and facilitates dissemination of the outcomes of their studies related to healthcare practice, medical education and research.
GMU Research Division organizes workshops and seminars on a regular basis for young healthcare professionals/scientists who wish to conduct research in medicine and other health related topics. GMU is planning to develop collaborative projects in partnership with multi-
national pharmaceutical and biomedical companies, once the research facilities are in place.
GMU faculty has a proven track record in academia and health care established over the past decade. In the current year GMU has invested heavily into research for establishing an ultra-modern facility to undertake laboratory-based research and its application in clinical practice in
areas related to molecular biology, toxicology and drugs and therapeutics.
According to the Provost, Prof Gita Ashok Raj, “The time has come to lay the foundations of a research-based university for the future generations of health science investigators”.
