Bangaru Laxman Sentenced to Four Years' Jail

New Delhi, Apr 28 (IANS): A Delhi Court Saturday awarded four years' rigorous imprisonment to former Bharaitya Janata Party (BJP) president Bangaru Laxman for accepting a bribe from a fake arms dealer in a 10-year-old graft case. The court also slapped him with a fine of Rs.1 lakh.

Additional Sessions Judge Kanwaljeet Arora handed down the sentences after holding him guilty Friday an d sending him to judicial custody.

Arora, who is also special CBI judge, pronouncing the sentence, said: "Balancing the twin interest of the society and that of the convict, I am of the opinion that interest of justice would be met if the convict is sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a term of four years and to pay a fine of Rs.1 lakh for the offence under section 9 of Prevention of Corruption Act."

The case dates to 2001, when newsportal tehelka.com carried out a sting operation that caught Laxman on camera receiving money from a journalist posing as an arms dealer. He later resigned as the BJP chief.

Tehelka had released CDs showing Laxman accepting money for promise of assistance to a fictitious Britain-based company M/s West End International in securing a contract for the supply of thermal imagers to the Indian Army.

A Delhi court May 2011 framed corruption charges against Laxman. The CBI, in its charge sheet, said that Laxman accepted Rs.1 lakh from the representatives of the purported firm in 2001 at his office for pursuing their proposal to supply certain products to the army.

"Tehelka portal scribes, impersonating as representatives of West End International, had held eight meetings with Laxman between Dec 23, 2000, and Jan 7, 2001, projecting themselves as suppliers of defence-related products," said the charge sheet.

However, Laxman had said that the investigations of the case were politically motivated and were not conducted in fair manner.

Alleging that the Congress party had funded this sting operation, Laxman said: "Congress party did use the Tehelka tapes in the general elections held in 2004, which goes on to establish that it was Congress party or the persons having interest therein, who funded this project, wherein I was framed... I never had any disposition to commit any offence."

Corruption is ramphant in India. Whoever corrupt should be punished and their assets should be seized. There should not be any discrimination for those with different political affiliations. In front of law, eveybody is equal. But in India, there are different laws for different people. Highly influencial guys escape punishment. Need to punish all corrupt in congress as well. If they do, then more than 90% of our politicians will be jail. If we want corruption free India, we need to do that.

Why other corrupt politicians not meted any jail terms like Lalu,Kalmadi,Sampangi......Very unfortunate that a national ex boss went for jail terms for mere 1 Lakh rupees bribe.Bangaru Laxman gold old of seventy years and also diabetic.Due to the nature of the corruptions, age, first time offender and health condition, he could be given leniency in punishment.

No decision of the government was made or changed because of the bribe taken by Bangaru. No public money was swindled.Bangaru took money on his own or was duped. Nevertheless the party removed him from his post immediately. Appreciate BJP for the high standard of morality and expectation from its people.Contrast this to scores of Congressmen occupying their post shamelessly inspite of prima facie case against them.

Question is: Why Tehelka has been inactive in the most corruption marred period of Indian history? Why? When u claim u r a journalist u need to prove that by ur conduct.  Two defence deals, Bofors and West End, one real and one stage manged and fictitious. One involving Rs 64 crores bribe another Rs 1 lakh as inducement. Two accused at various stages of corruption. One Rajiv Gandhi and another Bangaru Laxman. One is Bharat Ratna and another will spend four years in jail. Mera Bharat Mahan.
PERSON TAKING 1 LACK GETS JAIL (DESERVINGLY & its a good judgement) , BUT PEOPLE LOOTING LACKS OF CRORE REMAIN FREE AND GO ON RULING THE COUNTRY. THIS HAPPENS ONLY IN INDIA.

Very good, our Supreme Court set an example by awarding Jail sentences for taking bribe. But same time bribe giver also should be punished too. Just imagine for 1 Lakh Bribe four years of Jail sentences so calculate the Jail terms for scam of 176,00,000/- Lakhs of Crores Rupees!!!!!!!!!!!! I think few generations of Congress Allied Party Leaders next kins’ births takes place in Jail only
