In 'Satyamev Jayate' Aamir Deals with Female Foeticide - and How!

New Delhi, May 6 (IANS): Disbelief, horror, tears, smiles --- Aamir Khan evoked all this among his rapt audience as he dealt with the sensitive topic of female foeticide and bias toward the male child in the first episode of "Satyamev Jayate" Sunday - without being preachy.

There were many moist eyes among those in the TV audience and many more at homes and offices across India as people tuned in to watch the much-awaited programme, which Aamir said in his ads he wanted to replicate the phenomena created by the epic "Mahabharat" and "Ramayana" teleserials of yore on Sunday mornings.

Equipped with well-researched instances and case studies, Aamir's one-and-a-half hour programme was telecast on Star Plus and Doordarshan simultaneously.

The maiden episode highlighted how unethical medical practitioners are hand in glove with families wanting to kill the female unborn baby.

He also dispelled the perception among people that female foeticide is practised by rural people or those living in small towns with Mitu Khurana's case. She is a doctor who has left home to save her twin daughters from death from her educated in-law's family.

The episode started with the case of Amisha Yagnik from Ahmedabad who said she was forced to abort her female unborn child six times in eight years, while Parveen Khan, from Morena, Madhya Pradesh, was brutally bitten by her husband on her face for having given birth to a girl child against his wishes.

Delhi-based doctor Mitu Khurana was asked by her orthopaedic surgeon husband and in-laws to abort her girl twins just after 20 weeks of conceiving.

She said her husband and in-laws "took every wrong step to force me to abort" but thanks to her family (father)"I saved my kids", Mitu said on the show.

Her mother-in-law, a retired vice-principal from a Rohtak school, kicked a baby basket with one of the babies down the stairs. Miraculously, the child was saved.

"My mother-in-law was so much against my kids that she tried to kill them even after their birth," she said on the show.

The story of the three women brought tears to host Aamir's eyes as well as that of many in the audience.

According to 2011 Census, the rate at which the unborn female child is killed amounts to killing off 10,00,000 girls a year.

According to the 2011 census, there were 914 girls for every 1,000 boys.

Aamir brought into focus the dangers of female foeticide by showing a village in Khurukshetra in Haryana where marriagable men have not been able to find women to marry as there were no women in that age bracket left.

He highlighted another danger of female foeticide - human trafficking. Virendra Vidrohi, a social activist from Alwar Rajasthan, said thousands of women from poor families in eastern states are being "sold" in some places in Rajasthan due to a dearth of women.

"In the last one year 15,000 women from Bihar, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh have been brought and sold here to families. This has led to human trafficking in Rajasthan," he added.

Aamir also forcefully stated to the audience that the sex of the unborn child depended on the chromosome of the father.

"If we worship goddess Durga, why kill unborn girls," he said.

Aamir also brought on the show two journalists who carried out a sting operation against doctors involved in sex determination in Rajasthan and how the case is still dragging in various courts in Rajasthan.

He kept people glued to the show and promised to tell them of a "magic wand" to get rid of the evil practice of female foeticide at the end of the show. Pointing at the audience, he said it is time to take a stand and all should get involved - and now.

In fact since TV serials was introduced in India, I find Satyamev Jayate to be the best among all. The first slot of this serial "female foeticide" is an eye opener that where are we heading to. I have two daughters and I feel proud of them not only as a father but also feel proud that they are more precious to me than diamonds. People all over India were thinking that the poor & backward class are the bigger culprits but after seeing this serial it is now proved that the richer class are the criminals. Govt introduces policies and laws and they remain only on paper.

Because of delay in action on these doctors and in-laws it gives rise to more and more such incidents. I feel the Govt should take immediate and fast action on these doctors and in laws who practice this method of killing daughters before they are born or who think daughters are a liability to the society. I hope this serial will be an eye opener to every indian who watches S.J. and we are looking forward to more information on various issues that is crippling and destroying this country in total.

There are people who see red in everything. He might have left his previous wife but not killed anyone. This show is all about killings of the unborn that is going unabated inspite of legal ban. He has taken up a social cause. Every one wants to get married to a girl 10-20 years younger to them but abort the fetus of girl child without any hesitation. I thank Aamir for such a gesture of goodwill.

Amir Khan needs to introspect before anchoring this kind of Programme. The emotions expressed by him in the show apart, he should first think the fate of his wife and children whom he ditched for marrying again. Is this what he is preaching ?????

This was a show that can change the face of television. With it`s brilliant formatting, it offered a clear, crisp and focused understanding of the issue, genuine and informed discussion and a call to action. Nothing shrill. I have worked with women`s issues for 27 years and this was the first time I found Indian t.v. handling a women`s issue with respect. It evoked empathy, self-reflection, and an sms. When was the last time you saw something on Indian t.v that made you feel included as an intelligent viewer. For me, it was may 6th, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.. Naina Kapur

i'm totally satisfied with d Amir Khan n his efforts in d form of this reality show "Satyamev Jayate"....superb show, actually we shuold'nt give d title of show to dis program...dis is the truth n reality of normal person in dis world.....who is suffered frm such type of incidents n become its victims..!
Recently 1st episode was realted to "Female foeticide"....yep, its true dat in this educated n modern period , some stupid n moron personalities support female foeticide....favour difference b/w sex(male n female)...n some women/mothers don't take any strict step against these misconseptions....which is the disrespect of women character....!
But during the coarse of this show, lots of black frolics are coming in front of society, n people should have to do some efforts n take strict actions against this all.
Specially women should not have to keep quiet n do struggle n raise her voice against this.
Usually we think dat female foeticide occurs only in villages n by illitrate personalities but this is not true at some extent.......in most places , female foeticide is done by well educated n higher class personalities also.
Main role is played by the doctors....we call doctor the second God, but now a days doctors are not less than brute....doctors are same as responsible in this all.
Why don't people think tht girls are also have same value as much boys have, even girls play more n important role in our society.......a male is incomplete without a female.
If these misconceptions 'll gonna continues then one day 'll come when there'll b no girl for a boy to marry.
The main phylosophy of people is that they want girl for marriage but can't tolerate their own female baby at birth time....why so?..only we have need to change our mentality, nothing else...!
People should have to understand the importance of baby girls same as that of baby boys....then only our train of life 'll balancing drive.
