After SSLC : Renewed Love Among Students for Arts, Commerce

Mangalore May 23 : Now that the SSLC results are out and parents and students are busy in getting admissions (majority have completed) to the best of colleges in the city a change in the trend for preference for different streams has slowly emerged in Mangalore.   This year many students have opted for arts stream, which till last year was not finding favour with parents and students.  While demand for commerce stream has remained constant, thanks to the new found love of Mangaloreans to go for Chartered Accountancy and MBA, there has been a slight decrease in the clamor for science stream and it is expected to continue in the coming years.

Many reasons are attributed to this new found trend of preference of students.  Lionel Aranha, CA and adjunct faculty  member at IIM Kozhikode ascribed this new trend to the dwindling job opportunities in the engineering section. “I feel there are not many openings in engineering field and even campus selections have dried up.  Even qualified engineers are struggling to find suitable jobs which must be a worrying factor for those who have witnessed their predicament.

In arts and commerce there are new vistas of opening and vast scope of job market.  Management is the in thing now and MBA is the buzzword and students and parents must have realized this truth”, says Lionel Aranha.

He also says many students who do engineering land up a job in software companies where their specialization holds no importance as they are required to do only coding and decoding.   If at all they are  unable to land up in a good job they will have to  come back to commerce and spend another five years to complete their MBA, which is nothing but waste of time and money.

Now there is increasing awareness about the commerce stream providing vast opportunities for students as far as job opportunities are concerned.  Parents and students have realized the scope Chartered Accountants, Company Secretary and other jobs in the finance sector and more students opt for commerce.   Many GSB students have found fascination for CA considering the vast scope it offers.

The demand for arts may also be attributed to the fact that media and humanities offer everlasting scope   for jobs.  Though there is an insinuation that more students are giving a shot at IAS/IPS cadres and hence opt for arts, it cannot be cited as the reason for more students opting for arts.  Lionel says in the absence of proper and qualitative tuitions for IAS/IPS our students will not go for it.  “We have a unique trend here where unless we have tuition facility we don’t go for such competitive exams.  If someone takes efforts to provide quality coaching class for these competitive exams there will definitely be enough takers for this”, Lionel opines.

Students of undivided Dakshina Kannada district have always shown their preference for science stream as it is the doorway to fulfill the ambitions of parents and students to become engineers and doctors.  Students work hard burning mid-night oil in order to get top ranks in CET and other competitive exams to get admissions to best of engineering and medical colleges.  There was also a certain amount prestige (until recently) associated with a student taking up science.

Slowly this fondness for science is on the downslide and it really augurs well for other streams like arts and commerce.  At least parents and students have taken note of the trend and responded keeping the changed scenario in mind.

In the olden times Parents couldnot afford to Engineering and Medical as it requires much money and high donation , and only students from rich people can afford that. Now even parents have money but dont want their chidren to become Engineers or Doctors as parents may be thnking there will be too much spending as only if their children could get prescribed job otherwise waste of moeny etc. Any way it is all change of time and job market. Nowardays one has to make money only in whatever way but no value of trade or post or higher studies .

Any stream is good , but one has to stand up in the league to b counted. Say , engineering should b done from iit's , rec's or other top colleges with good marks so they can get in campus otherwise its big strugle in job market but self empoyement or cunsulting or govt job option is alwas open . Medicine is ok with any college , since one can start their own clinic , marks does'nt necessarily count. MBA 's should be done with only IIM ob school or else its waste . Arts is also good option since law cab b practised independently , and also they vl find civil services exam easier. CA still has quality ( limites intake ) and enjoys one of the best. I feel we start career very late

, early twentys sumtimes mid or late twenties. Reading is repeatative in all standards and even graduate to masters. One can shrink those unwanted years to add upto extra 'working years'. Say if one can become graduate at 18 and start working is good idea. But i envy those early boomers , peaple just after sslc start working and do something of theirown also continue their staudies. These peaple end up being big enterpreneurs and provide employement for pg's , engineers etc. Advantage science peaple have is , they can venture into commerce or even arts stream also but vice versa is not possible. Just like non IT engr , mech or electrical can switch on IT field , but software or IT enge cannot switch traditional field like mech or civil. Entertainment is the richest industry in the world , those work in this field get fat package , be it , actors , directors , copy writers , content writers , singers , composers , choreographers , even web designer , game programers , lastly even small time artists. Plus they enjoy the fame , which other orthodox fields dont have. The problem with civil service field is , one has work in a remote village even naxalite and work under corrupt , uneducated politiciam and salute them .

Happy to know that finally the craze of science, being either in an engineer or medical field has faded.Thousands of people who choose science are either unemployed or doing some other business. Our state is filled with either doctors or engineers in a family.Finally.......people have realized that there are so many opportunities taking arts and science.Good luck to all the new entrants.

Science was a prestige matter few years back. Before 10 years engineer means big thing. Now almost everybody is an engineer. Then came a trend that software engineer means big.Now every second person is software engineeer. After Bcom or BA,if you do 1 or 2 certifications,u can also become software engineer. There was a trend that only software engineers travel among contries. Now even finance managers, buyers, fashion designers visit different contries. It is the old mentality that still says science subject gives more job opportunites.

Students in Mangalore very less awareness & guidelines about IAS/IPS/KAS/KPS it should be improvised & provide coaching to students.

Whatever the case might be science students has more job opportunities than commerce & BA. And its not true as mentioned in report that for MBA after engineering you have to spend 5 years. after engineering it will take only 2 years to complete MBA.Science students get more knowledge to crack prestigious entry exams than bcom or arts students since maths is most common subjects in all theses exams. Only 2% pass CA exams rest all has to find some low paying jobs in the initial years of there career.

Here I am not trying to discourage commerce or Arts students. But just advising them science is any day much better field. 7 years of hard work will definitely pay good in your future life. Think well before taking any career decision.

    Dear Vivian
You must be thankful to the Lord that you are in some 'field'. Unfortunately many aren't these days inspite ofall 'developments' we see around us. Our 'golden' days will never come back- they were very 'pure' those days and 'love' was overflowing! There was no need for 'renewed love'for anything as is mentioned here in the Caption!

MBA with "engineering background" is recommended by MNCs.

MBA with arts and commerce does not have much value and they are not given much salaries. Most of these people work for 12-20 thousand salaries.

SCIENCE and MATHEMATICS are the most respectful fields. SCIENCE and MATHEMATICS created the revolution in this world. One can not imagine a single thing in front of you without science. Commerce and arts comes only next to science.

    JAI ho science students.

I am extreemly happy that people of mangalore have come to realize that Arts and commerce subjects are equally important as science to go forward in one's carrier. as i too am in the field of education directing number of students every year to persue their education according their intrest and not according to the intrest of the parents.we as parents and elders need to direct the young one's but not seek our priestage. All three fields are very good if we have real goal in life.

Not only Commerce and Arts courses are attractive in job prospective but cost wise also compare to Science courses, Commerce and Arts courses are highly reachable to even financially poor students too. Engineering and Medical Colleges are also sucking money from society with their exorbitant non-refundable Capitation Fees which is for most of the Parents it is imaginary figures only. One thing is sure in this part of the World that Accounts, Personnel & Administrative jobs are always available in each & every organization but Engineers and Doctors have to look for concerned sectors only. If possible for any Parents, Aeronautical Engineering is also having bright future too since more & more countries are looking for new Airports which means air transport will also make huge progress in future too

In the competition world every stream will be have their own advantages and disadvantages.... This is a very good trend. Apart from traditional professional courses, other streams like arts, commerce, law too need students opting them by choice, rather than ing them after elimination of other options. Similar trend is found in developing countries too, where they have realized that the "Quality Of Life" takes a priority over "earning in life"!
