Apologize, Doctors Tell Aamir Khan

Mumbai, May 30 (IANS): An umbrella body of 21 medical institutions Wednesday asked Bollywood star Aamir Khan to apologize for accusing doctors of malpractices in his TV talk show "Satyamev Jayate".

Medscape India said the representation of malpractices supposedly perpetrated by doctors was "rather sad" and Aamir Khan should offer his apologies.

"It is rather sad that doctors should be made the object of such shameless, unilateral scrutiny," Himanshu Mehta, co-founder and advisor to Medscape India, said.

After highlighting social issues affecting Indian society, Aamir Khan, in the fourth episode of his show, turned the spotlight on healthcare and malpractices in the medical profession.

He highlighted unethical practices, corruption and scandalous revelations in medical treatment.

"Aamir Khan is my favourite actor and he should stick to making films," said another doctor, Sunita Dube, president of Medscape.

"Surprisingly, no doctors' body has spoken against Aamir yet. We need to stand united against such blatant lies. We are going to write a scathing letter demanding an apology from him," Dube said.

Medscape pointed out that doctors were subjected to assault without any fault and many people didn't understand the pressures of the profession.

"Where is Aamir Khan when doctors are assaulted? Where is he when we give free treatment to the needy?" asked Kishore Taori, president of the Maharashtra Medical Council that is associated with Medscape.

Before asking Amir Khan to apologize for having exposed some of their colleagues, these Medical Institutions should have conducted an inquiry into those allegations and should have cancelled the to save the face of the dedicated practitioners. Or is it that those 21 institutions have accepted the charges levied on their colleagues and fear that more will be exposed if Satyamev Jayate continues?

What apology ?!!! Where are the doctors when patients die due to negligence? Where are they when doctors give more importance to private-practice patients than directly-admitted patients to the hospital? So many doctors say that they give free treatment. Hello doctors, please, first do your daily duty in hospitals properly then think to give free treatment. And one thing, do you people give free treatment every day? See, giving free treatment few days in a year and doing proper and honest duty in the hospital every day is totally different, understood? If only thousands or lacs doctors are against Aamir then we the crores of people of India are for Aamir, thats it.

What Amir Khan has said or intend to convey was complete truth which is happening in Medical field. He has never mentioned any where that all the Dr's are butchers! Earlier we were also not very closely connected to this profession now I am a mother of a MD Dr and has faced the situation right from CET whether it is for MBBS entrance or MD Entrance to getting the Degree. According to me such professions where human life is concerned no reservation should be there for any class or creed. It should be completely on merits then such mal practice dr's would be little less.

Now what happens is people are paying in lacs to get seat in Pvt hospitals and immediately after finishing their education want to earn what they have lost as fees. My child being a 90% student had to waste 2 years once to get a open seat in Govt for MBBS and again waste one year to study for MD as she has no reservation and wanted a seat on her merits.

He was pointing at only corrupt people why should he apologize even some of the Sr.Dr's who have given the examples then where is the question of Amir apologizing. Was it not right how many Dr's license are cancelled in India? Why there is no answer or No's. Truth is always bitter and I and every one should support such eye opener programs. Satya Meva Jayate... Jai Ho.

Even the good and ethical doctors would welcome this show. The helpless common man suffers silently at the hands of these heartless doctors whose only interest is to make money. Thankfully we do have good doctors who are passionate with their profession but they are a tiny monority.

If you doctors are practising your profession ethically, why should you feel guilty. Amir Khan is trying to expose those doctors who are taking advantage of their profession to make money unscrupulously. I have known doctors who are very good and also doctors who experiment with patients by taking advantage of their ignorance. Amir Khan is doing a great job by enlightening the public of some of the maladies in our society.

Amir has addressed only small sect of doctors who are corrupt. He has not said that all doctors are corrupt. I have worked in a govt hospital in Karnataka, where I had witnessed similar cases. Abortions were conducted by doctors for a meagre fees of 100 rupees , without appropriate consent from women. Having said this, I have also worked with physicians who worked& relentlessly ( Interns & PG's during 80's) in casualties around the clock without taking breaks nor eating their meals.

Some of those are great practitioners and still continue to be great. To give one of those example is, Dr Devi Shetty who is a cardiothoracic surgeon in Bangalore. "Satyameva Jayate" is only an eye opener for corrupt practitioners. Asking Amir to apologise is really a primitive notion from the doctors.

What Aamir has said is indeed truth so there is hardly any reason enough for him to Apologize. Medical studies has become a business for Medical colleges and Institutions and the amounts that are demanded paid and recovering that amount with inerest is something that the doctors look for and so the healthcare is becoming not only expensive but some have no access to it. Free and charitable doctors is a bygone era. We can count them on fingers of such doctors. Aamir I am with you. Expose everything that is done in the dark. Again not all doctors are vicious.

Amir Khan must have said right words. Many of the doctors act like butchers...!!!??? Although I don't blame all the doctors...there are good and ethical doctors..I know 3 to 4 doctors..who are loved by all and they live poor..I know a doctor who is not qualified enough but his service is very very Good. Another doctor is well qualified and serves only poor and leads a very moderate life....Nut many of the doctors fool the people and try to become rich overnight...Amir Khan must have expressed his own experience....why e has to apologize...There are self centered butchers so called doctors...!!!???? Amir Khan's statement need not apply to all doctors..!!??
