I Won't Apologise to IMA: Aamir Khan

New Delhi, Jun 7 (PTI): Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan today refused to apologise to the Indian Medical Association which has accused him of defaming the medical profession through his popular TV show "Satyamev Jayate" and said he is ready to face any legal action threatened by it.

"I am very comfortable if they (IMA) plan to take legal action if they feel that I have done something wrong. Of course, the courts are available for them. My answer is no, I will not be apologising," Aamir told NDTV.

The actor denied IMA's charge of defaming and insulting the medical profession."I deny that I have done that. I have the highest respect and regard for the medical profession," he said.

In an episode, aired on May 27, the 47-year-old actor highlighted the malpractices in the medical profession.

The IMA had demanded an immediate apology from Aamir and warned him of legal action if he failed to do so.

"Aamir Khan should apologise for having defamed and given one side of the story on medical profession. If he does not we are contemplating to take legal action against him for defaming and demoralising the medical profession in his TV show," IMA Secretary General Dr D R Rai had said.

Aamir, who has been focusing on social evils through the show, said his show is not against doctors or the medical profession.

"If the medical profession has been insulted and defamed by anybody, it is probably by those who are indulging in unethical practises," Aamir said.

Aamir said he had received two kinds of responses from the medical profession after the episode was aired. One was the kind of response that IMA has given while the other one has been "extremely positive" from doctors.

"I have received letters from various doctors saying that they are so happy when they saw the show that finally someone is talking about this because this is something they were upset about and did not know how to deal with," he said.

These doctors were unhappy about various "unethical practises" which were going on in the medical profession.

"They have actually thanked and congratulated me for having done what I did," he said.Aamir said that doctor K K Talwar, head of the Medical council of India (MCI), who was on the show, had written a letter to him which was very encouraging.

"I can imagine it would not have been easy for Dr Talwar to face the tough questions that I had for him on the show that day but he faced those questions and wrote the letter after the show was televised saying that he really liked it," the actor said.

Talwar said that everything would be done by the MCI to improve the situation. "A statement like this really encourages me because I feel he is someone in a position of power at this point of time. If he has a positive attitude towards bringing about change, then that is wonderful to hear and know," he said.

Aamir said he was aware that a few doctors were unhappy with him. It is upto the medical profession to take action to remove this disrepute that is faced by this noble profession.

I am totally with Mr.Aamir Khan.Whatever the stand he took is absolutely correct. This is the facts what he has highlighted in the show with ample number of evidences to prove his claims by well known/reputed doctors and professionals. He has never defamed any doctors or done anything wrong, only did his job by bringing the facts to the notice of public which they never aware of.Those who indulging in the malpractice definitely may feel guilty/pinch.He has exposed the real facts.Doctors profession is indeed sacred and noble.

But the way in some medical institutions/establishments/drug/medicine producing companies and link between the doctors and their malpractices at the cost of poor/gullible patients is really heart paining/burning.Therefore question of Mr.Aamir Khan's apology is beyond anybody's imagination/guess.Hats off to Aamir Khan.

I support Aamir. He should not apologize the IMA. since he has brought the real truth to the indian public, its obvious that the doctors are scared now. Also he has given the ideas as how to deal with the hospitals & doctors. Now how will the doctors loot the people ? Indeed he is doing a good job.

I totally back Aamir Khan. He should not have to apologise. He showed both sides of the medical profession. the good and the bad. the doctors asking for an apology should be the first who are investigated. What do they have to hide??? What are they afraid of? Are they guilty of the crime Aamir Khan spoke of?

I agree with Aamir. He should not apologize. Infact IMA should thank him for the concern he has shown towards his countrymen. I am really thankful to Aamir Khan that he has raising issues related to common man in his show. He is not doing it for money but for the people of India. Keep it up Aamir. The country is with you. Always.....

No male will agree to abort a girl child that’s sure-Steven, Pakshikere..

Steven, who told you this? I know some guys who forced their wives to abort the child. One guy got married and his wife conceived immediately. Husband forced his wife to abort the foetus and this shameless husband was saying that he wanted to enjoy life. It's five year's old story and his wife never conceived again. Now this man is repenting. So it's not right to say that men don't support abortion. There are several men in our society who go for abortion. I completely support Amir Khan on this. What is right is right and can't be wrong. Finally truth prevails..

If he is so much concern about these he should educate women and shouldn’t bring hate among families. No male will agree to abort a girl child that’s sure!! Everything happens because of the women mentality and doctors are helping to do so that’s it.

Aamir, i am with you. i watched the entire episode, and it's very true. Everyone knew this, but you made an impact, a collective approach involving related proffesionals and bringing out both good part and bad part of the medical field. The lobby has to protect their wested intrests, so they will make such attempts. Aamir hats upp to you for your courage. you are truly inspiring to the young/old crowd. keep it up the good work. I am sure there are lots of well wishers who will pray for you, and support you. Love you.

    Dear IMA,
You didn't see the other side of IMA, I mean better part of Doctors serving our Society, shown in "Satyamev Jayate" ????

Did you miss Dr. Devi Shetty's part in the programme?

Dear Doctors, I have a question for you, if you find "Gangrene" in a patient's dont you ask for Amputationof that part, so that it doesnot go to the rest of the body???????

It is time to identify "Gangrenes" for your profession and to AMPUTATE them from the most NOBLE and respected professional group.
