Nine Jailed in China for Mine Flood that Killed 38

Beijing, Jun 18 (IANS): Nine people have been sentenced to varied terms in jail for a deadly flood in a Chinese coal mine that killed 38 people two years ago.

A total of 115 miners were rescued from the flooded Wangjialing coal mine in Shanxi province in March 2010, Xinhua reported.

One official named Jiang Shijie was sentenced to four years in jail, while the other eight got three years each.

The People's court of Xiangning county ruled that the nine people neglected signs of flooding and failed to take proper measures before the mine was filled with water.

The accident caused an economic loss of over 49 million yuan (around $8 million).
