Bantwal, Jun 27: Rural police on Wednesday June 27 arrested three notorious persons in connection with thefts at the houses, shops and temples, and recovered jewellery worth over Rs 6.12 lac from them.
The arrested have been identified as 44-year-old Indrajit alias Indra, a resident of Annoji railway station, Hassan district, 24-year-old Babruvahana alias Ashok and 19-year-old Gopi, both residents of Bommanahalli in Hassan. Indrajit was living temporarily at Padekallu, in Karkala town.
Addressing media persons at Bantwal rural police station, Dakshina Kannada district SP Abhishek Goel said that the night patrol policemen led by sub-inspector Mahesh Prasad chased three men who were hiding near a bus stand located at Manihalla in Navoor gram panchayat, here on June 21. The policemen were successful in nabbing Indrajit while the others fled.
When the police subjected Indrajit to interrogation, he confessed that he had committed thefts in several places for which cases had been registered in different police stations. He was produced before the court and was granted police custody.
The police also arrested Indrajit’s associates Babruvahana and Gopi near the bus stand at Uppinangady, said Goel. The police recovered 200 grams of gold jewellery and 185 grams of silver jewellery from the trio.
The three had burgled Raja Rajeshwari temple, Polali, Kuppila temple in B Mooda village, shops in B C Road and Sajipanadu, several houses across Beltangady taluk and Puttur, elaborated SP Goel.
Cases against Indrajit have been already registered in Beltangady and Shirva police stations, while cases against Babruvahana and Gopi have been registered in Udupi and Beltangady, Koppa, Balehonnur, Sakleshpur and Belur, added SP Goel.
They used to wander and send their own women to houses of lonely elderly women in the guise of beggars. They would also go as rag pickers in order to gather information on the occupants of houses. They would identify the houses and burgle either during the day or night by breaking locks. The booty was laundered over alcohol and prostitutes, said Puttur ASP Anuchet.
Circle inspector Anil Kulkarni, Bhaskar Rai, ASI Mahesh Prasad, Rakshit Gowda, probationary sub-inspectors Ravishankar and Divya Gopinatan, police personnel Jagannat Shetty, Laxman, Jaya Kumar, Kutty M K, Suresh, Chamayya, Chidanand, Narayan, Vasu Naik, Krishna, Vijayesh, Mohan, Mahesh Gatti and Praveen were involved in the operation.
