Veteran Actor AK Hangal is Dead

Mumbai, Aug 26 (IANS): Veteran Bollywood actor A.K. Hangal passed away here Sunday morning after a prolonged illness aggravated by a recent hip fracture, a family member said. Hangal was 97.

"My father died around 9 a.m. The cause of death is mainly age-related and his lungs had also become weak and collapsed," Hangal's son Vijay, 76, told IANS.

"He died following lung and kidney failure after he suffered a hip fracture," the actor's physician Koulsoum Hossein told IANS.

"It is a great shock and loss to his family, admirers and the entire film fraternity," said a family member at the actor's Santacruz residence.

The veteran will be cremated Sunday afternoon at Vile Parle crematorium.

According to a hospital official, Hangal was on life-support systems for the past few days but did not respond to treatment.

Hangal was admitted to the Asha Parekh Hospital Aug 16 following a hip fracture. He had been suffering from old age health problems for a long time.
His wife passed away before and he is survived by his son, Vijay.

The actor was associated with the film industry since 1967 and worked in nearly 225 films. He is best known for his roles in "Parichay" and "Sholay".

The actor made headlines in 2011 when it was revealed that he was struggling for livelihood as his source of income had dried up and there was hardly any money for food or medicine.

Following that, many people from the film industry, including actors Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan, offered him financial support.

Hangal was last seen in a TV show, "Madhubala", in May.

It is shocking to read from a news item that, No prominent people in the industry were present at the funeral. This is becoz that he was not a rich man when he died, even though he left a rich memorable memory behind. This shows, Industry respects only the rich. May his noble soul Rest In Peace.

GOING FURTHER ON MY EARLIER OBITUARY,
AK SAHAB WAS A VERY SIMPLE MAN WHO LIVED ALL HIS LIFE IN MODERATION AND HUMILITY.
I WAS WATCHING A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT HIM JUST NOW.
EYES HAS BECOME WET AND I AM REMEMBERING MY FATHER WHO IS NO MORE.
HIS LAST DAYS WERE NOT SO GOOD BUT BIT SOOTHING WITH THE COMPANY OF ASHA PAREKH AND OTHER TRUE FRIENDS.
HIS LAST FEW WORDS WERE 'ZINDAGI SE KOI SAWAL NAHIN HAI SHAYAD ZINDAGI KO KUCH SAWAL HO'
GREAT MEN ALWAYS LIVE HUMBLE AND DIE HUMBLE BUT PEOPLE REALISE THEN TOO LATE.

I am shocked to see that TWO people have 'Disagreed' for all the 19 comments of the readers below. Why anyone should disagree even when some good hearted persons just pray for the departed Soul ? Is it because A.K. Hangal, a Kashmiri Pandit, is well known as "Raheem Chacha" for his memorable role in Sholay? It seems that some people are pathetically allergic to the names of other religions, even if it is a name of an 'imaginary Character' in an 'imaginary Story' of 37 year old commercial movie. It is frightening see the depth of hatred in the minds of some vicious people towards other religions. Any way A.K. Hangal was a Kashmiri Pandit.

May his Soul Rest in Peace. His comedy role in Shaukeen was quite different and memorable. People in Mumbai used to wrongly think that he is related to Gangubai Hangal the Legendary Musician of Karnatka, even though A.K. Hangal is actually from Kashmir.

His great role of Rahim Chacha in Sholay, and his golden words, “Itna sannata kyon hai, bhai.”
Its a pity that many such award winning actors in India suffers from financial drawbacks in their old age.. Government giving them honor and award for performances but then forget about them and to look after their needs and old age health condition..

In last stage indeed good gesture from Asha Parekh to admit Shri A.K.Hangal at her small Hospital. Next turn is of for Jannat is none other than Dilip Kumar turning 89 (saira banu minus 22=67) and Pran completing 92. Rest follows like Manoj, Shashi and in between somebody will take lead or overtake..in the middle itself.. Hangal's son looking much older than himself..
