Karnataka’s Labour Minister B N Bache Gowda, who chaired a meeting of the State Unorganised Workers Social Security Council, said 36,000 drivers of private commercial vehicles have registered their names under the scheme since it was launched in the state 2011-12.
The State Government had earmarked Rs 2 crore for its implementation. The target for coverage during the year 2012-13 has been fixed at 5 lac private commercial vehicles drivers.
The minister said the beneficiaries would get an insurance cover of Rs2 lac e against death and suffering deformity either permanent or temporary disability sustained in any fatal road accidents.
The Council had also reviewed the progress on the implementation of the “Janasri Insurance Scheme” intended to provide social and economic security cover to those who are working in the unorganised sector in over 45 segments.

Thu, Aug 30 2012A Vehicle Driver and an Army Soldier are having Same risk. When a driver goes out of his house on duty in the morning , his family is not sure that he will return home alive. It is equal to a Soldier going on the war front and not sure that he will live to see the faces of his family members. The decision of the State Govt to Cover the Private Drivers with Insurance of Rs.5 lakhs is appreciable.

Wed, Aug 29 2012Every private commercial goods and passenger vehicle drivers and legal occupants (passengers) are and already insured by the vehicle owners, it is a crime not to insure them and vehicle should not be plied on public roads. If this scheme is over and above the insurance which the vehicle has and the driver is doubly benefited it is well and good, then is there any way to doubly compensate the victims of vehicle accidents?.

Wed, Aug 29 2012The scheme is good. But I think at the time of claiming the insurance money, the family of drivers have to spend atleast 90% of the claim amount to the Govt. officials to pass the claim as usual. The Government should be strict in this regard.

Tue, Aug 28 2012THIS IS A UNOFFICIAL LICENCE TO SPEED.
WHY SHOULD GOVERNMENT SPEND MONEY FOR THE MISTAKE OF THE MOTORISTS.
LIKE ANYWHERE ELSE THERE IS A GRAVE NEED TO MAKE DELIBERATE MISTAKES OF PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE.
WE MUST EMPOWER OUR TRAFFIC POLICE TO MAKE JUDICIOUS REPORTS SAME LIKE DUBAI.
IT MAY TAKE TIME BUT THAT IS THE ONLY WAY.
ALSO THEY MUST MAKE THE CULPRIT PAY FOR THE TRANSPORT COSTS OF THE VICTIM WHEN THE VEHICLE IS UNDER LEGAL REPAIR.
