Ex-Liverpool Striker Sinama-Pongolle Joins Rostov

Moscow, Sep 6 (IANS/RIA Novosti): Ex-Liverpool forward Florent Sinama-Pongolle has signed a two-year contract with Russian Premier League side FC Rostov.

In August, the 27-year-old striker left Sporting Lisbon by mutual consent, after playing only five matches in two seasons and spending most of his time out on loan.

Sinama-Pongolle's Russian wife will help him adapt to the move, he said.

"I hope I will adapt quickly to the new country and the new team. I'm relying upon the help of my wife Anastasia, who is from Russia, and my new teammates," he said on the Rostov website Wednesday.

"It's obvious that the team has character, ambition and it is run by qualified coach Miodrag Bozovic. I can say that I come to Russia as no tourist, I hope that I'll be able to help Rostov to reach the targets that have set."

Sinama-Pongolle was signed by Liverpool on a five-year deal in 2001 after he won the under-17 world championship with France, winning the Golden Boot and Golden Shoe in the process.

The forward scored only four times in his 38 appearances for the Reds, where he was in the squad for Liverpool's victorious Champions League campaign in 2005.

After leaving Liverpool in 2006, he played in Spain for Atletico Madrid and Recreativo before moving to Portugal in 2010.
