Walmart Hopes to Open First India Store Within 18 Months: Report

Walmart Hopes to Open First India Store Within 18 Months: Report

New York, Sep 21 (PTI): Walmart Stores Inc has said it is capable of opening stores within 12 to 18 months in India, a media report says.

"The company is capable of opening stores within 12 to 18 months and would be seeking permission to do so from states that have already indicated their willingness to have the US retailer set up shop" Walmart Stores President and CEO for Asia Scott Price said in an interview to The Wall Street Journal.

"Two years would be a reasonable time frame in total," he added.

Price, however, said the company has not yet decided where or how many stores it would like to have in India. But he said the company expects to continue in retail its current partnership with Bharti Enterprises in a chain of 17 cash and carry stores.

Walmart Stores Inc is not in discussions with any other company for a potential retail partnership at present, Price was quoted as saying in the report.

Price told WSJ that he was confident that the reform would be permanent and said the company is committed to India's long-term future.

Showing resolve for reforms, the government yesterday notified its decision to allow global retail giants like Walmart to open stores in India.

With this notification, multinational retailers can invest upto 51 per cent to open stores in 10 states and UTs which, till date, have agreed to implement the decision.

Whether Wallmart coming with 100% stake or NOT, but definitely slowly gradually small time retailers will lose many things in future. We have already seen the in cities because of our tata/birla/others owned multi-brand retail malls /stores. Why should only Tata/Birla/others biggies make money?

Why not Wallmart or other foreign player? After Manmohan Singh’s strong worlds against FDI, there is big recovery at SENSEX and Dollar rate went down. Means somewhere it is helping India to emerge back??!!

We have 100% foreign stake owned multinational cos in different segment like FIGs/Chemicals/Consumer Goods/Corporate Services and others. Why not Retail? Why people making noise? Really can’t understand!!

All this hue and cry of limiting the foreign companies is only for a while. When one state start allowing, then it will slowly spread to other states! Plz remember East India company also came here to do business before it was too late then to realise that we were physically made slaves, but this time, they are coming here in a big way, and they are here to stay forever, we will fall slaves to their products and culture and it seems we may not able come out of this slavery in the near future, until someone like Gandhiji comes to preserve Indian food and Indian Culture.

    Dr. S Kamath,
Way back in 1993 the nation had the same fear of the Indian manufacturing sector being eaten up by foreign companies. But see the result in 20 years. It is the Indian companies who have marched across the globe and bought foreign companies and brands and also established and expanded Indian businesses across the world. The same will happen in retail. Our own sleeping giants will wake up when they see the competition at their doorsteps and in a decade you might see Indians owning retail giants like Tesco and Carrefour. In a small city like Dubai there are at least 4 Carrefour stores, 1 Geant store and atleast 30-40 other hypers like Lulu, Choitrams, Waitrose, Spinneys etc, but at the same time small neighbourhood stores are flourishing in every residential locality. In fact over the past 10-15 years the small stores have grown over 3 times in number. Therefore it is really stupid to say that the small stores will disappear when the giants enter. As the PM has said, in an expanding economy there is place for all to grow. Only be assured that there will be no place for crooks, hoarders, speculators and middle men and they will surely be wiped out and this is good for all of us.

Well thought out article. The main consideration should be a totally competent Supply Chain Mechanism. Elimination of middle men and vagaries of transport will be eliminated. The farmer will definitely benefit as also the consumer. I hope the interest costs of inventories and own transport, storage, have been factored in.

Frankly, most neighborhood kirana stores will not dispose off most expired goods, but will rather still try to sell them to the unsuspecting customer at full retail price.

If walmart and other international stores come into the country, and if proper policies are put in place, consumer can be most assured that these stores will dispose off expired goods / merchandise atleast a month before expiry, and absorb the loss because of their financial power, unlike cunning baniya store which tries to sell everything to unwary customer, and then has no return policy if customer wants refund!

I remember when KFC started its operations In Bangalore, people threw stones and damaged their properties.

Today, the same people are eating in KFC, many of their families are working for KFC, and many of these people are even suppliers to KFC!!

Today India is dotted with not only KFC, but also with Burger King, Pizza Hutt and so many others!!

    What a Irony!!!!

We will not only have Walmart, but Carrefour, Tesco, and many others repeating the same history all over Inida, which i feel is in the best interest of farmers, and unemployed youth of our country who are exploited by our corrupt politicians, and middle men.

I fully agree with the view of Bulsam, Mangalore and one would see, that KFC and others have not replaced our good old Idli Sambar, Dosa and other restaurants which are churning out unhealthy food, most of the time.

Walmart or no Walmart, no one can replace the cunnning Baniyas, Kirana stores who churn out shoddy poruducts.

Ravi Shenava you are right. I had invested my four lakh rupees in six such Indian company shares in 2008, who were specifically supplying their products to gigantic Wallmart. I had ed these companies only because of their connection with Wallmart, thinking that wallmart will never withdraw their support to these companies. But after 2008-2009 recession in America & Europe, Wallmart dumped all these Indian suppliers in dust bin and all these Indian companies have closed, and I have lost all Rs.4 lakhs. Even if Wallmart comes to India directly also, they will repeat the same thing.
Lesson: never invest in any Indian company having connection with wallmart.

Lookout their recent media report regarding sacking of “Walmart Employees” worldwide because of business recession. And now suddenly they got enough money to invest in Indian Retail Sectors? So, wise thinkers might have already got to know who all purchased the share holding of Walmart so that they can invest in India and pay back as dividend if they are successful. If any idea goes way weird, then Indian National Banks will suffer and seek Government help for simulation. Again our Government will say that to go ahead with economy reforms, it is very essential to give relief package to Indian Banks. This is the best way to bring black money to Indian Market and make it white with dignity. Now People says “Koyla (coal) ka dande me haath kala nahi hota hai lekin ab ki baari, haath sona ho gaya hai”

Small producers & manufacturers who depended on WallMart have perished. For example, M/s.Alps Industries were supplying Bed Sheets to wallmart and their Share was quoting Rs.82/- in BSE in 2008-09, and M/s. Gupta Synthetics was supplying Turkish Towels to WM and their Share was Rs.64/- in BSE. Two years back WM stopped purchase from these two Indian suppliers stating recession in USA, and these two companies collapsed and today their Shares are Quoted at Rs.2/- & 4/- respectively in BSE, these companies have closed only due to WM.
If WM enters India they will throw away small Indian suppliers like dirt the very next moment they see slow down in Indian Economy.

As per the new FDI policy, if Wal-Mart puts 50% of their investment in cold storage chains and infrastructures, the 40% of rural poor farmers produce that otherwise were getting destroyed, due to non-availability of cold-storages, will reach the consumers through MNCs. The middlemen like the baniyas who were sucking the farmers will get eliminated, the farmers will get more for the produce and we consumer will get the product at lesser price.
Further these multinationals will create new brand of consumer friendly ready to use products for the new breed of young nuclear family consumers. Even thousands of Kirana shops and goodina angadis will benefit out of it.
All those who expect big retailers like Wal-mart to come in and devour small kirana shops should pause and think. Can Big Retail really do that? Just look at what the average kirana store offers the average Indian household.
Firstly, it is just a stone’s throw away. So anytime the family needs something, it is easy to just stroll over and get it, even if it is as paltry as a loaf of bread.
Secondly, there is the trust about all the items being fresh and reasonably priced at the friendly neighbourhood kirana-walas.
Thirdly, there is free home delivery, usually on a bicycle, for the regular monthly supplies, colloquially called ration, and
Fourthly and most importantly, there is credit. Since the shopkeeper knows the families in the vicinity well enough, he can actually extend credit to the neighbourhood customers.

    Dear Dr.S.Kamath, Mumbai.

First of all we need to understand that the big retailers like WallMart are not omnipresent, not even in the US. There may be,if at all,one shop in a city like Mangalore and nowhere else in DK/Udupi. So,there will be plenty of room for all those small scale retailers elsewhere. After all,we already have in Mangalore SPAR Hypermarket in the Citi Center. They are also a foreign outfit.

Secondly the infrastructure needed for large scale retail needed is not there in India - no cold storage facilities, no warehouses, no transportation for perishable goods etc. There is also no expertise and investments in India for these.

Thirdly, today it is the several middlemen who hoard and increase the prices at their will. Proper supply chains will eliminate these middlemen who today lobby (with money) with the politicians.

As a fourth point, in India today 40% of the produce of farmers is lost due to the lack of proper storage and transportation facilities. With proper supply chain and large scale investments the farmers will sell whatever they produce. Both the farmers as well as the consumers will benefit.

Last but not least, India does have some good example of foreign investments in supply chain where the foreign companies help the farmers to grow more and better produce. When India finally allowed Pepsi Cola in the country the condition was they help farmers. Fortunately Pepsi had some food products (Potato Chips, Frito Lay). They did help Punjab farmers to grow more and better potatoes so much that eventually Punjab has surplus potatoes which had to be destroyed .... due to the lack of supply chain to the reatil stores.

When there is a reform all the opposition cries about the 'Aaam Aadhmi', the poor, the farmers, the backward and so on. Over all these years we only hear about the numbers.............70% rural, who will be affected and 30% urban who will benefit. Which politician of the opposition lives like an aaam aadhmi? Someone gives them time on National TV and they pour their venom cursing any government in power. This is their fundamental right of speech. I have seen myself in the middle east the huge Hyper Market Chains coming in every day. Same time the number of corner shops mainly owned and run by Indians are increasing and prospering. So what is the BIG Logic about what the opposition is taking about?? We still go to the corner shops for our day to day needs and visit these Hyper Markets once or twice a week because of comfort, parking and choice (all under one roof). For many it is like a outing to pass time with kids.

HAHAh... USA's Wallmart entry is ok & going in right direction, but same USA's "Washingtons post's report on "A" grade for MMS led UPA Govt ...YAAKE ?...this is wrong direction !!!
FDI is welcome move as far as they buy stuff from local farmers and encourage agriculture and back to the farm concept thus avaoiding middlemen and farmers getting right price for their produce & other products as much as possible from local producers if available. Only lossers will be the middlemen and other local retailers especially in the urban areas.Poor Janatha/Ganesh Bazaar's, Fathima stors might be having sleepless nights with FDI entry to Mlore, but am sure they have made enough money to sustain in these market conditions.
At the end of the day, any measures which encorages farmers is a welcome move.

I would like to put some of my views on this FDI in multibrand retail .1.Is it good for the Country ? in short term yes but in the Long term No .Wallmart will invest say 2 Billion USD 50% in Rural areas etc .This will improve the delivery but the profit margin will be eaten by those companies and hence neither farmer nor Consumer gets any benifit
2.One of the Condition is 30% of the products should be brought from within India and rest 70% can be imported from China .Wallmart will import more than export and hence trade deficit will further become negative
3.Lot of retail traders will be loosing jobs
4.Foreigners will take up top management jobs and small jobs like Clerk,Cleaners ,Porters will be given to Indians .
I am not against FDI .But before that Indian manufacturing should be increased to such a high level that Wallmart should prefer buying from India than China
