Don't Create Controversy Over Thackeray Memorial: Uddhav

Mumbai, Nov 21 (IANS): Adopting a statesman-like approach, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray made a fervent appeal Tuesday not to create "any controversy" over Bal Thackeray's memorial at Shivaji Park.

"Our family is grappling with a colossal tragedy. This is not the time to create any controversy on a memorial for the Shiv Sena chief," Uddhav said in a statement. "I appeal to you with folded hands - kindly help us to remain calm in this tragic time. Those attempting to rake up any controversy should understand our predicament," he said.

He said the sea of humanity of 2.5 million which turned up to pay its last respects to the Sena chief was calm and disciplined. "I salute their spirit and grit in the tragedy. Even the decision on a memorial will be taken by these Shiv Sainiks. I shall not come in between the Shiv Sena chief and the Shiv Sainiks," Uddhav said.

Uddhav's statement came in the wake of a controversy following a demand by Sena leader Manohar Joshi for a memorial to Bal Thackeray at Shivaji Park, where he was publicly cremated Sunday. While the Maharashtra government appeared favourably inclined to the move, several groups and some activists have opposed the proposal.

Even as the debate rages in Mumbai, in adjacent Thane, the civic body is planning to erect a huge statue of the departed leader outside its headquarters.

There are 1.2 billion citizens in India. Every citizen is important and all have their rights as they are equal. Every citizen of India do something to develop and improve the country. If every citizen who dies in India demand for a memorial and plan to erect a statue then there will not be enough place to live for the citizens who are living in the country. In 1960, he launched a cartoon weekly Marmik with his brother. He used it to campaign against the growing numbers and influence of non-Marathi people in Mumbai, targeting Gujaratis and South Indian labor workers. He formed the Shiv Sena on 19 June 1966 with the intent of fighting for the rights of the natives of the state of Maharashtra. The early objective of the Shiv Sena was to ensure job security for Maharashtrians competing against immigrants from southern India, Gujaratis and Marwaris. In 1989, the Sena's newspaper Saamna was launched. On July 28, 1999 Thackeray was banned from voting and contesting in any election for six years from December 11, 1999 till December 10, 2005 on the recommendations of the Election Commission. After the six-year voting ban on Thackeray was lifted in 2005, he voted for the first time in the 2006 BMC elections.Thackeray was criticized for his praise of Adolf Hitler. He was quoted by Asia week as saying: "I am a great admirer of Hitler, and I am not ashamed to say so! I do not say that I agree with all the methods he employed, but he was a wonderful organizer and orator, and I feel that he and I have several things in common...What India really needs is a dictator who will rule benevolently, but with an iron hand." However, Indian Express published an interview 29 January, 2007: "Hitler did very cruel and ugly things. But he was an artist, I love him [for that]. He had the power to carry the whole nation, the mob with him. You have to think what magic he had. He was a miracle...The killing of Jews was wrong. But the good part about Hitler was that he was an artist.

Statue for what? For installing constant fear by so called sainiks to please the master? Money should be spent for cleaner city by collecting garbage and providing usable public toilets!!
