Three Tibetans Kill Themselves, Toll 85

Dharamsala, Nov 27 (IANS): Three more people died in Tibet after setting themselves on fire in the last two days, taking the total such cases to 22 this month and 85 since 2009, the Tibetan administration said Tuesday.

While Kunchok Tsering, 18, died in Achok town in Labrang, Gonpo Tsering, a 24-year-old father of three, set himself on fire Monday in Kanlho. Sangay Dolma, a 17-year-old nun, died in Dokarmo town in Malho Sunday.

The Central Tibetan Administration said despite its appeals not to take drastic action, 85 Tibetans had immolated themselves in Tibet since 2009 protesting against Beijing's "repressive rule".

Tibetan political leader Lobsang Sangay said China's new leaders should accept the requests for official visits to Tibet by UN nominees and implement recommendations made by UN agencies.

"I appeal to the international community and governments to stand for justice by answering the universal aspirations of Tibetans in Tibet -- the return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet and freedom for Tibetans," he said.

The Dalai Lama has lived in India since fleeing his homeland in 1959. The Tibetan administration in exile is based in this northern Indian hill town.
