Bangalore: Girl Jumps from 3rd Floor After she is Caught Copying

Bangalore, Dec 6 (DHNS): An 18-year-old student of a City college, who jumped from the third floor of the college building on Thursday after being reprimanded by teachers for indulging in copying during examination, survived the fall.

She sustained fractures on the right shoulder and lower rib but was out of danger, doctors said.

Sharanya S, a II PUC student of the St Joseph’s Composite Pre-University College on the Vittal Mallya Road, left for college early on Thursday morning to take internal assesment tests for physics and kannada. Midway through the test, she was caught cheating by the invigilator.

The incident was brought to the notice of the vice-principal, who reprimanded Sharanya for resorting to unfair means. Sharanya subsequently rushed out of the examination hall on the third floor of the building and jumped from the corridor.

Police said the incident occurred in the presence of teachers and students.

Denying that Sharanya was caught cheating, principal of the college, Father Gilbert Saldanha, said in a statement the girl walked out of the room and before the teachers could react, jumped from the corridor. Reasons behind her action were unknown, the statement claimed.

The Cubbon Park police have registered a case against the girl for attempting suicide.

I hold the parents responsible. Today children are differnet in temperament and emotional maturity. I got the chance to meet the student and the parent. I found that the mother expected too the girl to take a rank. Therefore in order to score more she tried to copy. When she was cuaght she felt her mother would be upset and therfore she took the extreme step. The teacher had not shouted at the student at all. Let us stop blaming institutions all the time and advise parents not to use old tricks of parenting for the present generation of children. They will defintely be stressed out.

College teachers should not behave rudely with the students when they made mistakes (while copying) immediately they need to take the students to counselling otherwise the students will commit suicide because of tension etc etc.

This shows how stressed students in India today are. They take such steps to avoid any action.Colleges have to take the initiative of setting up counselling departments which most colleges I believe have but for namesake keep running .Need of the hour is to reduce the increasing suicide cases by including various programmes or classes on "STRESS HANDLING" in the Syllabus as well as in classroom .
