Mangalore: DC Lauds City's Cleanliness, says More Should be Done

Mangalore, Dec 11: Mangalore City Corporation in association with Malabar Gold & Diamonds, Prajna Counselling Centre, Kankanady and Prerna women's self-help group organized a mass cleanliness and awareness campaign at Town Hall here on Tuesday December 11.

Addressing the gathering, deputy commissioner N Prakash said the first thing that struck and impressed him about Mangalore was the cleanliness of the city.

"The city's cleanliness proves that Mangalore is a place of intellectuals. This is a cleaner city than Bangalore. Still, we need to work more to improve the city further," he said.

Hilda Rayappan of Prajna Counselling Centre said in her welcome address that empowerment was the basic need of women, and that humanity was the foremost necessity in empowerment. "If there is humanity in empowerment then that is perfect empowerment. Only through cooperation, love and harmony can a woman be empowered and strengthened in the society," she said. 

"By organizing this mass cleanliness and awareness campaign without any inhibition the members of Prerna self-help group have proved their strength in society. I had been to Bihar were I was shown four-lane roads which were completely developed. But that is not development. The real growth of society lies in women's empowerment and not in its economic growth," she said.

Sheena Shetty, ombudsmen of MNREGA said that people should be clean internally and externally so that they can achieve a state of bliss easily. "First man should clean his heart by fosterting good thoughts, and gradually clean his surroundings, by whic he will find heaven here itself. We should talk less and work more," he said.

"Human power is nation power. We should assimilate information and knowledge from everywhere.  On this occasion let us pledge that we will not buy plastic, will not discard it unscietifically and will not burn plastic. This will make us role models to the entire world," he added.

Mayor Gulzar Banu, MCC commissioner Harish Kumar, deputy mayor Amitha Kala, public health, education and social justice standing committee president Bhaskar Chandra, and director of Malabar Gold & Diamonds Shaheen Parvez were present.
 
Madhu S M thanked the gathering.

On this occasion pamphlets and eco-friendly bags were released.

Prerna women SHG organized cultural programmes and a rally to create awareness among the public was also held.

    Definitely yes. more should be done about cleanliness. We always say keep the City clean and beautiful. But does nothing. No doubt its the duty and responsibility of the citizens to achieve this goal. Action always speak louder than words.
