'Barfi!' Out of Oscar Race

Los Angeles, Dec 22 (IANS): Director Anurag Basu's "Barfi!" has failed to qualify for the best foreign language film category for the 85th Academy Awards, according to the latest Oscar shortlist.

The film, featuring Ranbir Kapoor as a deaf and mute boy and Priyanka Chopra as an autistic girl, earned rave reviews and enjoyed box office success.

Of the 71 films that qualified for the Oscars from across the world, nine have been shortlisted, which will further compete to make it to the final five nominations.

The nine selected films are "Amour" (Austria), "War Witch", (Canada), "No" (Chile), "A Royal Affair" (Denmark), "The Intouchables" (France), "The Deep" (Iceland), "Kon-Tiki" ("Norway), "Beyond the Hills" (Romania) and "Sister" (Switzerland).

The final list will be announced Jan 10.

    Barfi was a good movie only for Indians. Because its just a copied version of bunch of Hollywood movies. Director Anurag Basu might have fooled Indians but Oscar committee cant be fooled so easily. Instead of this, Gangs of Wasseypur or Pan singh Tomar would have been the better choices which could have at least fetched some appreciations.

    Whoever was in the committee to send this movie for oscar nominations from India should have been severely drugged while watching it. I have never seen such a plagiarized movie and shamelessly cut and pasted. Thank God by not being on the oscar list it saved a lot of embarrassment for Indians.

    My bus conductor friend Oscar Dsouza would not watch this movie for Gods sake.
    The juries should be given 'Thyanpanna bhandari novina yenne' to relieve them from the severe head ache they would have after watching this cxxp.
