BJP MLA's Demand to Ban Skirts Irks Women Leaders

Alwar, Dec 31 (PTI): BJP MLA Banwari Singhal's demand to ban skirts in schools in Alwar district has invited sharp reaction from women leaders and girls, who held protests in front of the legislator's house here and demanded an apology from him.

However, the MLA said his only aim was to save school girls from the prying eyes of men and not to restrict their freedom.

"It is a childish statement and the MLA has expressed that he is a narrow-minded person. We went to protest against him yesterday in a group of 35 but he did not come out of his house," Gurjeet Kaur, a college student, said here.

She demanded that Singhal should apologise for his remarks and said the demonstration would continue if the MLA didn't seek apology. "We understand things and we and our parents are well aware of our safety so the statement of the MLA is uncalled for," another girl Kirti said.

However, the MLA said the girls and others should understand the meaning of the statement instead of taking it in a wrong way. "I just demanded change in dress code of school girls from skirts to trousers or salwar kameez just to keep them away from lustful eyes of people. I did not demand restriction on their freedom. The girls protested and I tried to explain my view but the protest was politically motivated," the MLA said.

Singhal had written a letter to the chief secretary on Friday last to make salwar kameez or trousers the dress code for secondary and senior secondary schools in Alwar instead of skirts.

Reacting sharply to the MLA's statement, activist Kiran Bedi today said, "Wearing skirt does not mean you have a loose character. It is a dress. I feel before giving such orders the way our elected representatives speak they should introspect their behaviour".

NCW spokesperson Mamata Sharma said, "In this era when we are trying to make young girls passengers of future why do we want to make them prisoners of past. After so many years of independence we are talking about dress code, it is very saddening.

V Shetty Mangalore in your statement you have mentioned the lustful eyes of the people.

Do you have a family Mr V. Shetty, do these people have the same lustful eyes within the family and do they look in the same ways in their own house as you say.

These people with lustful eyes need to learn how to respect people and behave with good attitude.

The way you explain is very shameful. According to you the Doctors, Nurses, social workers, who work with body parts of human being should close their eyes and work. They are also human being, they know how to respect people and treat the people whatever is the situation. So why don't you learn to respect each other either it is Men and Women.

Respect women or men regardless of their clothing, religion, culture, and languages.

You and the BJP leaders need to practice yoga and meditation.

Mr V. Shetty you need counseling and also BJP leaders.

Is this BJP MLA going Taliban way. It is sad see comment from fellow reader using the word "Understand MLA" supporting MLA's views.

I need to ask all these hypocrites, who want to curb women freedom/independence putting a dress code

    1. When muslim girls/women wear Burka why you want to ban it.

    2. Majority of women (including family members) in twin district wear saree. when wearing sari mid portion of the stomach is not covered. why don't you have any problem with it.

But when girls wear skirts, jeans or tops you have problems. Why?

    1. This is your mind set.
    2. When you preach others about dress code, because your eyes too prey women.

    SIMPLE SOLUTION

Educate all the men that women is not a SEX object. Appreciate the beauty, but respect them. We should try to educate from primary school to respect women. Open counselings center for all uneducated men to respect women.

Most importantly punish every culprits. Every men should be terrified before seeing a women with preying eyes.

But it is not easy. Just an example our own mangalore Home stay attack, where women commission report prepared by the women itself found girls guilty rather than men who evaded their privacy.

    GOD BLESS INDIA.
