What it takes being a Muslim? SRK pours his heart out

News Delhi, Jan 23 (IANS): Superstar Shah Rukh Khan bares it all on what it means to be a Muslim in the Post-9/11 world and how he became an "inadvertent object of political leaders" in first person account for Outlook Turning Points magazine, published in association with The New York Times newspaper. He also features on the cover of the publication.

Titled "Being a Khan", the write-up appears in the current issue of the magazine and the 47-year-old actor, one of the few Indian actors with international recognition, writes: "I sometimes become the inadvertent object of political leaders who choose to make me a symbol of all that they think is wrong and unpatriotic about Muslims in India."

"There have been occasions when I have been accused of bearing allegiance to our neighbouring nation rather than my own country - this even though I am an Indian, whose father fought for the freedom of India. Rallies have been held where leaders have exhorted me to leave and return what they refer to my original homeland," added the superstar of Hindi cinema.

SRK is married to Gauri, a Hindu, and has two children - Aryan and Suhana.
"I gave my son and daughter names that could pass for generic (pan-India and pan-religious) ones - Aryan and Suhana. The Khan has been bequeathed by me so they can't really escape it."

"I pronounce it with my epiglottis when asked by Muslims and throw the Aryan as evidence of their race when non-Muslims enquire. I imagine this will prevent my offspring from receiving unwarranted eviction orders or random fatwas in the future," he wrote.

He said he became so sick of being mistaken for some crazed terrorist, "who co-incidentally carries the same name as mine that I made a film subtly titled 'My Name Is Khan' (and I am not a terrorist) to prove a point."

Set in the post 9/11 US, "My Name Is Khan" focuses on religious and national identitaies through Rizwan (SRK), who has Asperger's Syndrome, and how his Khan identity becomes all important in a suspicious America.

"Ironically, I was interrogated at the airport for hours about my last name when I was going to promote the film in America for the first time,” said SRK.

Noel, why are you praising SRK so much. People are ignorant hence they praise, just like you. Reality is different. Ask a question within you, why he gets detained whenever he visits USA?
If any other person in his place would get arrested. He is hands in Glove with Terrorists & Pakistani Politicians. He has never condemned terrorism and never will.

Come what may.... there is only one country (sorry country fellows so called politicians) who play all the tricks just to win a vote. Innocent people like us are simply debating on unnessary topics. We all have friends from all major religion (like Hindu, muslim, christian etc..). To be frank I am an hindu residing in dubai which is a muslim country and trust me for last 7 years I have never faced any sought of problem. Most of my friends are pakis who treat us as their family... SO GUYS GROW UP its all about blody politics which is a ugly religion on its own.

I fully agree with Jay. SRK has been playing double game all these years, he has been great supporter of Pakistan for a long long time. Remember his anger when Pak Cricketers were not included in IPL. Know all, world would be at peace if terrorism never existed, this is the only truth.

@Jay, USA your quote "You will never fix something if you say it is not broken" is an eye opener. Pakis have done this since their inception. But always India has tried all FEVICOL'S to fix these unbroken ties. Finally your quote "if you are good the whole world is good" is golden and universal which apply to every human being irrespective of religions.

Crocodile tears or 'Taqqiya' Mr. SRK. First and foremost you condem which is against the nation. You being a superstar should have condemed 26/11, parliament attack & 9/11. You should have given calls to desist people from terrorist activities be it muslims or anyone. We try the Ostrich tricks when walking on the tight rope. Don't fool yourself and the audience b'coz they are all educated.

There is discrimination of minorities in almost all countries of the world. It may be either in the form of communal or racial discrimination. Equal rights for all are only mentioned on paper.

There are 57 countries in the world where Muslims are in a majority and in not one single country have you’ll given equal rights to the minorities, and I repeat not one single country.

    MR.JAY I COMPLETELY AGREE 1000 %WITH YOU

TODAY HE IS SUCCESSFUL NOT BECAUSE OF MUSLIMS BECAUSE OF OTHERS. IF YOU ARE MIXING THE RELIGION WITH BUSINESS OR POLITICS YOU WILL BE FINISHED LIKE PAKIS.

HOWEVER HE IS FRUSTRATED DUE TO HIS AGE AND HE CANT BE CALLED SUPERSTAR ANYMORE UNLIKE AMITHABH

Shah Rukh you have asked questions, I have some counter questions.
-People from all over the world come to the US and live in peace but they are not labeled terrorists, why?
-If you say after 9/11 the situation changed, they who were the people behind 9/11?
-Do you see any connection between 9/11 and Muslims?
-Why do the Indian people who are by and large peace loving, have asked you to go back to where you came from?
In short you seem to say that problems follow you and your community where ever you go, and you still do not understand why?

You will never fix something if you say it is not broken, so stop kidding yourself and do some soul searching and you will find the answers to all your questions.

The world is nothing else but an echo of what you say and do, and how your community treats people of other faiths. There are 57 countries in the world where Muslims are in a majority and in not one single country have you’ll given equal rights to the minorities, and I repeat not one single country.

Remember the old saying if you are good the whole world is good.
