Now Mani Ratnam's 'Kadal' faces protest by Christian outfit

Chennai, Feb 4(PTI) :  After protests by Muslim outfits against Kamal Haasan's controversial Tamil film 'Vishwarooopam', ace director Mani Ratnam's 'Kadal' (Sea) is now facing opposition from a Christian outfit which is piqued over some scenes in the movie.

Indian Christian Democratic Party alleged the film had objectionable scenes referring to Christianity and sought their deletion and warned of intensifying their protests if police do not initiate action.

They submitted a memorandum to police in this regard today. 'Kadal' is the latest offering of Ratnam and has actors Arjun and Aravind Samy in leading roles besides Gautham and Thulasi, children of yesteryear stars Karthik and Radha.

Haasan's 'Vishwaroopam' had faced hurdles after Muslim groups opposed it claiming the film offended their sentiments. The state government had banned it, following which Haasan moved the Madras High Court. A single judge's order of allowing its release was struck down by a bench.

Haasan and the Muslim outfits arrived at a compromise at a government-brokered meeting on Saturday. Following this, the actor withdrew his petition today against the ban and announced that the trilingual Rs 100-crore movie would be released in Tamil Nadu on Feb 7.

The actor made the announcement soon after both he and government withdrew their petitions before the High Court.

There are hundreds of stories/scripts available to produce a feature film. Why these producers and directors touching the faith of a section of the society?

In seventies and eighties, movies portray characters bring unity and friendship between tow religions and thus promote peace and harmony in the society.

Now, no essence in any movies, nor any melodious songs unlike int the past.

If any offensive scenes in the film Kadal, it should be d in the interest of respecting all religions.

Mr.Mani Ratnam is a well respected, responsible film maker like Kamal Haasan. They had given very good movies in the past and we expect to see many more excellent movies from them. Let us not forget that they are not "B" grade film makers. We have an excellent team of distinguished people in our censor board who know their limits and experts in their field. Now a days we see some groups sometimes politically motivated or looking for extortion from the film makers creating problems in the name of "hurting religious sentiments" etc etc and it has become a fashion, without even seeing the film. Let us not get carried away by these things. Watching a movie or otherwise is left to the individual.

Thanks Vivek, Mangalore for reminding me that I am in a Muslim Country. But I never feel it. Because here I got freedom until I jump on others compound. Nobody questions about my religion nor do we talk about others religion. We have Churches, Temples and Gurudwara in this Gulf Country but nobody till date stopped us praying there. Due to grace of God, not even single untoward incidents happened in this area till date. There is no rule or law regarding reservation or quota systems. Almost all Indian films are screened and released in this Gulf Country. All Residents knows very well that how they have to behave in the society. Except missing Indian Social Life in Gulf Country, we have everything available here but we miss you Dear Vivek

Very surprised to note that in TN, there is a party which has a tag of Christian which is highly deplorable if it is a political party.

Personally I feel it, it is Mani Ratnam Commercial group in hand with this party are playing this objection which will give them publicity without incurring any publicity cost. This negative publicity will fetch Mani Ratnam & their associates huge profit. Rock bottom for these biz entities is ' maximum PROFIT' .

I have not seen the movie or know the scenes which created this controversy. If the protests by Christian community is justified, then I too would like to support their sentiments. However, I would like to point out one thing. For ages we have been seeing Hindi or some regional movies and I am sorry to say that every drunkard is a Christian, every thug is wearing a Cross round his neck, the vamp or the seductress happens to be a christrian Woman and the laguage used by a Christian is abominable. Well Christians can talk better Hindi or English or the regional language without using the suffix "man" yes amn no man etc etc. However, no one objected to it. Marriages are shown as blessed by a priest within a day without prior preparation which is incorrect. No marriage is solemnised in Church without the consent of the parents of both parties and a minimum 3 weeks period elapses between the betrothal and marriage to understand if there are any antecedents that could affect the marriage in future etc. However, without studying all these a superficial coating is given to Christianity and many a times a glorifications of a christian person with a hint of downgrading the person's persona.

rameez, bangalore.. Please check my comment fully. I am of the view that if the Fil Censor Board has cleared it then it should be accepted. Failing which we would have muslims, hindus, christians, khap panchayats, gangs and gang leaders wanting to review. Either scrap the Censor Board and leave it to Aam Admi to decide, or let the Censor Board decide and let us all abide. My faith is definitely stronger. Jai Hind

you quote - "I am a Christian, and no instigation by anybody will make me react violently, and no book or media can change my belief."
i think you should open your dictionary and search for the meaning 'protest' - it doesnt mean voilent.
i can see your weak faith here. There will be no progress without harmony.

They have the right to protest. Nobody has the right to hurt the sentiments of any community or religion in the name of freedom of expression nor any religion taught. This is what happens when you give in to one movie. When we have the Central Board Film Censorship, why do we give in to fringe groups to raise their voices. This way we can never progress. Aam Admi concept is good as long as we are not overdoing it. I am a Christian, and no instigation by anybody will make me react violently, and no book or media can change my belief.

    Sachidanand,

Even if every Christian comes on the road the ratio is going to be just 2.6 %. Such a huge instigater you are, why don't you ask them to make a movie keeping in bad light lets say, Mahabharat or Ramayana ? You will be happy to see the protest is more that 80 % ??

Gentleman, don't send message of social unrest - please understand - we Indians are fortunate to have hand the opportunity to enjoy Diwali, Eid and Christmas that non other nation on earth enjoys.

Oh my God, my mistake I think Mani Ratnam touched the most favoured and sacred religion in India. Starting from 10th Janapath Road up to Kanyakumari, almost all people will protest now without even seeing the picture. Even most revered Foreign Preachers too would request the Indian Government not to release the film. I am sure people will come down from Delhi to Mangalore, Udupi & Bangalore to protest the film. Unfortunately, Mani Ratnam will lose the opportunity to get “Bharat Ratna” Award in his life time
