Britain to India: Koh-i-Noor Diamond in royal crown is ours

Feb 21 (Reuters): British Prime Minister David Cameron says a giant diamond his country forced India to hand over in the colonial era that was set in a royal crown will not be returned.

Speaking on the third and final day of a visit to India aimed at drumming up trade and investment, Cameron ruled out handing back the 105-carat Koh-i-Noor diamond, now on display in the Tower of London. The diamond had been set in the crown of the current Queen Elizabeth's late mother.

One of the world's largest diamonds, some Indians - including independence leader Mahatma Gandhi's grandson - have demanded its return to atone for Britain's colonial past.

"I don't think that's the right approach," Cameron told reporters on Wednesday after becoming the first serving British prime minister to voice regret about one of the bloodiest episodes in colonial India, a massacre of unarmed civilians in the city of Amritsar in 1919.

"It is the same question with the Elgin Marbles," he said, referring to the classical Greek marble sculptures that Athens has long demanded be given back.

"The right answer is for the British Museum and other cultural institutions to do exactly what they do, which is to link up with other institutions around the world to make sure that the things which we have and look after so well are properly shared with people around the world.

"I certainly don't believe in 'returnism', as it were. I don't think that's sensible."

Britain's then colonial governor-general of India arranged for the huge diamond to be presented to Queen Victoria in 1850.

If Kate Middleton, the wife of Prince William, who is second in line to the throne, eventually becomes queen consort she will don the crown holding the diamond on official occasions.

When Elizabeth II made a state visit to India to mark the 50th anniversary of India's independence from Britain in 1997, many Indians demanded the return of the diamond.

Cameron is keen to tap into India's economic rise, but says he is anxious to focus on the present and future rather than "reach back" into the past.

Good the kohinoor diamond is in UK. Imagine if it was in India where would it be? It would have by now gone from the hands of politicians to goondas to thieves and then broken into several pieces and sold in foreign countries and... CBI would still be investigating!!!

Even if it belongs to INDIA, how will it help bringing it back?
    - will it make us rich?
    - will it change our attitudes?
    - will it stop our corrupt official?
    - where will it be displayed as it is everyone's property?

I fully agree with Mr.Shahnawaz Kukkikatte's view that Britsh raj was much better than present day raj.It is centre or state.I was born in independent India and hence not known the situation of British raj personally. However I used to hear lot about British Raj.When I see todays happenings like mega financial scams, way of CBI workings, communalism, large scale communal appeasement, indiscrimnate crimes,Indian law and its falures every where to book the accused,Mega kick backs, way of tax payers money being looted by politicians, corruption dominating each and every aspects of human life, wrong conception/implication of social justice, rape and murder of girls/minor chilren on daily basis etc., to name a few I am come to the conclusion that British raj would have much better. At least respectful citizen would not have seen these maladies of today. The best governance i have seen is post emgency rule by Moraarjee Desai, and NDA rule headed by Vajapayee. Many of my degnified friends do express same view when we discuss the present day raj.Had there been Mahatma Gandhji lived today,he would have taken suicide by shooting himself by seeing/hearing the karnamas of present days rulers. We are illfated citizens of this country who are made to see the things i described above in independent India which few call it as 'Bharat'.

O Britishers, our generation miss you too much. Most probably we would have been in a much better position( undevided India). No boarder issues, no communal roits, good and broad roads, better facilities. One looter is better than hundreds of looters!

By the way India never get this diamond back, even though she will knock the door of International Courts of Justice. Like India, Pakistan also demanded Kohinoor, since Sikh Maharaja Ranjit Singh and decendents ruled pre-partition Punjab.......

Secondly according to legend ,who ever having this diamond they will take curse.

What you have now also is ours-Mr Cameron- Who can forget your plunder and loot of our country by 'dividing and ruling' for nearly 182 years? You talk of only the Kohi-Noor.Read History and the correct one at that- There were innumerable 'Noors' too- They were never accounted.....
