Former Samajwadi Party MP released after girl 'withdraws' charges

Lucknow, Mar 18 (IANS): Senior SP leader Chandra Nath Singh was released in Uttar Pradesh Monday after the young girl who had accused him of molesting her withdrew her complaint amid reports of political pressure to do so.

Sixty-two-year-old Samajwadi Party leader and former MP Chandra Nath Singh was arrested late Sunday night for trying to molest a co-passenger on board the Padmawat Express.

According to police officials the "matter was closed" after the girl, along with her family members, gave a written undertaking informing them that they were withdrawing the case registered at the Shahjahanpur government railway police (GRP) station.

The girl's parents, amid reports of political pressure, told the police that they were not interested in pursuing the case any further and said the leader had apologised to them and had regretted his behaviour.

When the GRP personnel arrested Singh, a former MP from Machhlishahr, it was discovered that he was travelling on a wait listed ticket in the AC coach. The girl accused him of being drunk and of sexually harassing her.

The passengers in the train sided with the girl and testified to the police team. The former MP, however, told the police that he was innocent and was being framed; all that he had done was to ask the girl to move a little, so he could sit on the berth.

Ram Asrey Kushwaha, senior SP leader had said that the matter would be brought before party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and state Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, and necessary action will be taken if the party leader was found guilty.

Rajya Sabha member and senior SP leader Naresh Agarwal termed the incident "very serious" and said that if the leader was found guilty, he would be expelled from the party.

But by Monday afternoon, things changed completely: The girl withdrew the charges and called for an end to the episode.

Sources say, the complainant was subjected to immense pressure from the arrested leader, officials and the ruling party, following which she withdrew her complaint.

Meanwhile, the main opposition party in the state assembly, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), walked out of the legislative council and demanded stringent and immediate action against the SP leader.

Earlier news

Lucknow, Mar 18 (IANS): Fresh trouble brewed for ruling Samajwadi Party Monday as its former member of parliament (MP) and candidate for Lok Sabha polls 2014, Chandra Nath Singh, was arrested on suspicion of molesting a co-passenger on board a train.

The high-profile politician was arrested by the government railway police (GRP) in Shahjahanpur when a girl, travelling on board the Padmavat Express, complained that Singh was trying to molest her.

When the GRP arrested Singh, a former MP from Machlishahr, it was discovered that he was travelling on a wait-listed ticket. The girl charged him of being drunk and of sexually harassing her.

The passengers in the train corroborated what the girl said, and testified to the police team. The former MP from Machlishahr, however, told the police that he was innocent and was being framed. He said he had only asked the girl to move a little, so he could sit on the berth.

The police conducted a medical examination on the former MP, who complained of unease and breathlessness and was admitted to the Shahjahanpur district hospital.

Policemen who arrested Singh said the MP was so drunk at the time that he was unable to walk. The ruling Samajwadi Party, however, refrained from commenting on the matter and said any action will be pronounced only after the probe report is produced.

The incident came on a day when Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav chairs a meeting on law and order in the state.

The ruling party has also been under fire for involvement of several party leaders and workers in crimes across the state.

    Mr. Prabhu,

No contradicting word about Mr. Modi's educational qualifications, nor about his developmental projects. He may continue to be elected for his lifetime - all the very best wishes.

But his personal life us way apart from political arena. Many of you his fans did not even know that he is married.

He is not a honest man if he hesitates to make that part of his life public, whatever reason he may have. I don't know what your feelings about this are.

    Mr. Ratnakara,

No doubt BJP and Congress are major political parties in India but that does not remove all other political parties from discussion. If you are taunted over Godhra or consequential episodes, you aren't saint anyway ! You never gave up nagging over Golden Temple attack.

Perhaps you are a bit too late to question about their educational background.

Why did we not question them when the illiterate come begging for votes and above all, why did we elect them ?

Now, you can't spit it out nor swallow it. Got to tolerate them or come on the streets demanding we don't want such people to rule us.

    Mr. Prabhu,

The CM of UP is one of the most educated of CMs who ruled the state. Please google and you will find the following result under his Education tab :

Dholpur Military School, Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, University of Sydney, Sainik School

Why are you blaming the CM for such a pathetic behaviour of a MP from that state ? Its we the voters who are electing such thug MPs, not the CM !

Yes he is not directly responsible for any of the incidents happening in the state like Modi of Gujrat. But being the head of states( BOTH ) are indirectly responsible to give justice to the victims and punish the criminals. What has happened to the murder case of SP officer in UP. no one is arrested so far. He may be well graduated but he should act according to the justice and should not close his eyes for the needs of his party. He is giving a lip service to the murder case of SP.

Now, you will not tell that Modi is not responsible for fake encounters too - will you ? Behaviour of a MP on a train is not in the hands of the CM but planned murders surely are.

Lets not use one yardstick to all types of offenses.

There are thousands of unresolved cases in the country. Do you blame respective state heads for legal status of all of them ?

Disrespecting an elected minister's qualification records does not give good impression about the judging individual.
