Chavan assures action against legislators who attacked cop

Mumbai, Mar 20 (IANS): Taking a stern view of the assault on a policeman by some legislators in the Maharashtra assembly complex Tuesday, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan Tuesday assured action against them by Wednesday.

"This is a deplorable and reprehensible act. Something like this has never happened in the history of this legislature. We are investigating, checking out the CCTV records and shall take necessary action by tomorrow," Chavan told media persons Tuesday evening.

The provocation for the attack was an incident Monday when Assistant Police Inspector (Traffic) Sachin Suryawanshi of Worli police station allegedly stopped the vehicle of independent legislator Kshitij Thakur and fined him for overspeeding on the Rajiv Gandhi Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

Thakur and Suryawanshi had an altercation when the police official during the speed check allegedly misbehaved with the independent legislator from Nala Sopara (Thane) constituency.

Condemning the assault on Suryawanshi, Chavan said there were legislative remedies for tackling issues and the incident should not have taken place in a democratic set-up.

Meanwhile, Thakur said he would "resign if proved wrong".

Suryawanshi has been suspended pending a probe into Thakur's complaint.
