Five Maha MLAs suspended for assaulting cop, may be arrested

Mumbai, Mar 20 (PTI): The Maharashtra assembly today suspended five MLAs involved in yesterday's assault on a police officer inside Vidhan Bhavan premises for the rest of the year and now they face the prospect of being arrested.

Showing no leniency towards its own members for their violent conduct, the House today passed by voice vote a resolution moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Harshvardhan Patil to place the MLAs under suspension.

Those suspended for their involvement in the unsavoury incident are: Ram Kadam (MNS), Jaykumar Rawal (BJP), Kshitij Thakur (Bahujan Vikas Agadhi), Rajan Salvi (Shiv Sena) and Pradeep Jaiswal (Independent).

Making the announcement in the House, Patil said the Mlas' action was "serious and lowered the dignity of the august house".

During the course of their suspension till December 31, 2013 the MLAs would not only be barred from participating in the proceedings but will also not be allowed to enter the legislature premises in Mumbai and Nagpur.

Sachin Suryavanshi, an Assistant Police Inspector attached to the Worli police station, was beaten black and blue by a group of MLAs outside the visitors gallery at Vidhan Bhavan, state's legislature complex.

Suryavanshi had stopped the vehicle of Kshitij Thakur, a Bahujan Vikas Agadhi MLA, on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link on Monday when the latter was on way to attend the Assembly session and slapped a fine for speeding.

The MLAs had claimed that Suryavanshi "provoked" them with his gestures while seated in the visitors gallery after the House was adjourned amid din over the officer's alleged misbehaviour with Thakur.

Suryavanshi, according to sources in state Home Minister R R Patil's office, had denied he was present in the visitors' gallery.

Meanwhile, sources in the crime branch, which is probing the incident, has said some CCTV footage they have gone through clearly showed the MLAs thrashing Suryavanshi.

"The MLAs are likely to be arrested soon as there is substantial progress in the case," said a police officer on condition of anonymity.

However, Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Himanshu Roy said the probe was on and it would not be appropriate to talk much at this stage.

"We have collected two CCTV clips and examined them. The footages of some more CCTVs are awaited," he added.

An FIR was registered with Marine Drive police station against MLAs Kshitij Thakur, Ram Kadam and around 14 others last night for the alleged assault on Suryavanshi.

The accused have been booked under IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 341 (wrongful restraint), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation).

Mr. Muna Kudroli, Mangalore, my only interest is inclusive growth of overall India in general and our region in particular.
Please note that the Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists and Parsis are referred in India as minorities and the so called ‘Hindu’, the very word that was imported from Persia, are called majority community in India. I too know that the Muslims are the second largest majority community in India and the world.
Please don't get excited. My view is 'LIVE & LET LIVE' and not to bully or poke the nose into others business. Is it happening in some parts of India and our region? The cases of so-called moral policing by Hindutva outfits have shocked the country and the world. Please learn to face the reality and what had happened here to the Christians and Muslims, in the name of religion is not good for the harmony of our region and the community. The children of this region should not grow-up in such a disturbed atmosphere. In this vast Universe that is billions and billions of light years in distance, our solar system and we, the human being are the tiniest particles of this Universe.

In India the police have to play to the tune of the political party that rule the state and if displeased them, this is what the result, the police are assaulted, transferred, their promotions are withheld and what not. There should be an independent cell to protect their interest like increase in salary, good working environment, better housing, right to fight for their JUST. Please bring a change to the out dated Police Act of British Raj.
The whole world know that different wings of Sangh Parivar, Shiv Sena, MNS and many small communal outfits are famous for taking law into their hand and the judiciary of our vibrant democracy seems to be helpless and could not arrest the culprits. What a tragedy? Are be living in a banana republic or a great democracy?
Tourists fear coming to India, minorities fear cooking their choice of food, Christians fear praying inside their church premises and dalits are always on the run to protect their skin from the upper class Hindus. What democracy are we enjoying? More than 70% of Rural India and 50% of Urban India are poor and struggling from hand to mouth.
Come on, the youth of India, you are the GenNext, wake up! And bring a change for your better tomorrow. The Please do something and free the stressed citizens from the political and communal cartels. Bring in progressive minded secular and honest politicians to run our State and our India. The student community should unite and arrest the rise of the hooliganism by few uneducated foot-soldiers of so called patriotic but communal parties that in the name of protecting culture and religion, destroying the social-peace and communal-harmony.

All law makers should be treated according to their class. If required they should be beaten with chappals by public as well as police.Nobody is above law.Instead of being role models it is disgusting to see them behave like criminals and animals.

This is a good lesson to police who always do favor to MLA’s & MP’s. Police should act independently without any fear of these thugs, if situation demand they should support public in overthrowing these unqualified MLA’s. Arrested MLA’s should be treated same like other prisoners in the jail……..

    Police are protecting the MP's
    and MLA's

And these MLA's are attacking Policemen?

Who elected them? We the people!
To lead us,to represent us, and to serve as role models.
If we entrust the authority over us to unruly, this is the fate! So we are to be blamed!

It was very unfortunate that group of MLAs in Maha state chased Mr Suryvanshi,ASI belong to Worli Police station who slapped Overstepped case for one of the MLA who in turn fist fight with Police officer! The action was not closed here,ASI visited Visitor's gallery of Maha Assembly where these MLAs are noticed him sitting in the Gallery!Immediately they(5 MLAs) chased him and assaulted(CCTV RECORDED)the police ASI!!!

Being lawmakers these thug MLAs are taken law in to own hand for which Assembly suspended them with voice votes. We, public demand that their MLA designation should striped pending inquiry and obstructing Govt job, assaulting, rioting by law makers were a serious offence and if found guilty should be jailed.Mere suspension from attending Assembly session is not enough and they should be taken in to police custody to take them to court.
