Mangalore, Mar 28: Suratkal Nagarika Samiti and Anti Tollgate Action Committee continued their agitation against the construction of a tollgate near National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) in Suratkal on Wednesday March 27. They led a huge rally from Suratkal to NITK and symbolically blocked the national highway 66 for a brief period in front of NITK campus.

President of Nagarika Samiti, Subhaschandra Shetty, addressing the protesters, reiterated that the decision to build the tollgate was illegal. He said that tollgates cannot come up within the limits of Mangalore City Corporation, and warned that the arrogant behavior of National Highways Authority of India will get fitting reply through the court.

T N Ramesh of Nagarika Samiti said that the hands of the people’s representatives are tied now because of the prevalence of election code of conduct. “The officials are trying to encash the opportunity arising out of this situation. The people will snub the officials for this behavior,” he said.

City corporator, Revati Putran, who represents the local ward, said that the corporation has already adopted a resolution against the construction of the tollgate here, and that the officials here have been apprised of the genuine problems faced by the local people. She said that tollgate will not be allowed to be built at the spot at any cost, as the place lacks various facilities needed for the construction of a tollgate.

City corporators, Ashok Shetty, Pratibha Kulai, Sumitra, Ayaaz, former corporator, Harish, Mahabala Rai Mukka, Pushparaj Shetty Kudumboor and office bearers of Rickshaw Owners and Drivers Association, Tourist Car Owners and Drivers Association, etc participated in the protest. Suratkal police personnel, led by assistant commissioner of police, Ravikumar, oversaw the law and order situation.

The call given by the agitators for a Suratkal bandh on Wednesday March 27 in protest against the decision of the NHAI officials to build the tollgate near NITK Suratkal received wholehearted response. Businessmen voluntarily downed their shutters to show their solidarity with the protestors.

This age old law of erecting tollgates between cities must be abolished altogether. Vehilces are already paying road tax and passengers travelling long distances have taxes included in their tickets. There are enough of check posts between state borders and districts bringing huge revenue to the Govt. Where is this money going?

I like this quote of Sir Winston Churchill in 1947 was a real prediction which has come true...." Power will go to the hands of rascals, rogues and freebooters. All Indian leaders will be of low calibre and men of straw. They will have sweet tongues and silly hearts. They will fight amongst themselves for power and India will be lost in political squabbles. A day would come when even air and water would be taxed.”

    Mr. Shaan,

do not comment just for the sake of commenting, try to know and understand the rules and regulations framed by the govt first. There is a clear cut guidelines from central govt about the distance between one toll gate to another tollgate, which should not be less than 90 kms. and in this case it is less than 70 kms.

Secondly there is also a guidelines which says, there should not be any tollgate within MCC limit area. These authorities violating both the norms.

Please understand the norms first before commenting...

This is trend of people, resisting every thing and wasting thier time in un wanted thing. Why not Toll gate.If they want good road then they have to pay toll. Protest for good road, rather than hindering development. By payment Toll they could demand for good road so that we could save lot of innocent people life on accident.

    Dear shaan ,
i believe you don't pay any tax in dubai , here we have to pay lot of our hard earn money as taxes. These taxes are not utilized in the best way such as building roads , but for politicians selfish gains such as gifting bicycles and laptops and sarees .

Road is for people. They are paying tax for using road.Government is duty bounden to provide infrastrucre. No more tax/toll by creating gate.In Kerala few days back when the toll gate was in the process of construction people thrown away the structures and never allowed it come up again.Suratkal people should draw inspiration from Keralites.Good that new Corporators have joined the stir.Where are our MP,MLAs?
