Protests reach PM, Sonia houses; anger spills onto Delhi streets

New Delhi, Apr 21 (IANS): Outrage at the rape of a five-year-old in Delhi spilled onto the capital's streets Sunday as scores of angry protestors stormed the barricades outside the residences of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

The protests that started early morning took on political overtones towards evening.

Demonstrators held rallies, squatted on the streets, scuffled with policemen and shouted slogans at many places in the capital over the rising number of rapes and demanded more and better security for women.

Since morning, scores converged outside the police headquarters at the busy ITO intersection and many sat on vigil outside the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as the anger swelled up among the people over the horrific rape and barbaric torture of the small girl, who doctors said Sunday was out of danger. The victim, the daughter of a poor labourer, is being treated at AIIMS.

Most of the protestors at the ITO and the Prime Minister's House at 7, Race Course Road, were from Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Those protesting at Sonia Gandhi's official residence, 10 Janpath, were from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

When police tried to stop them from entering the police headquarters in the heart of the capital, the demonstrators squatted on the busy thoroughfare, causing a traffic jam. The police also distributed pamphlets to them to maintain calm, but the pamphlets were torn off and thrown away.

The girl's alleged attacker, Manoj Kumar, 22, who is in police custody, claimed that a second person was involved in the April 15 rape in east Delhi's Gandhi Nagar. But police have denied it.

Security forces were taken by surprise Sunday when hundreds of BJP women activists marched to Sonia Gandhi's residence, shouting slogans "Enough is enough!" and "Save the girl!", and broke two barricades.

When they attempted to break down a third barricade, the police forcibly bundled them into a waiting bus and took them to the Parliament Street police station where they were let off. Over 100 BJP activists were detained.

BJP's women activists alleged they were hit by police, but the charge was denied by the police.

"We have not hit any of the women; no one was injured by the police action," Deputy Commissioner of Police S.B.S. Tyagi told IANS.

The women kept raising slogans all the while against the barbaric rape that has shocked the country and shamed the city.

In the evening, around 100 supporters of AAP gathered outside 7, Race Course, the Prime Minister's Residence. The police detained around 40 protestors and took them to the Tughlaq Road police station.

As the sun set, many more came out on the streets.

Hundreds of members of Left students unions and women's organisations gathered near India Gate despite the prohibitory orders in place, banning any gathering of four or people. "We tried to march from JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) to India Gate, but the police stopped us at Udyog Bhavan," said a member of All India Students Association (AISA).

To avoid a repeat of the Dec 16 violent protests around India Gate, a huge force of policemen has been stationed in and around the War Memorial. The Rapid Action Force personnel are also deployed in the area as a precautionary measure.

The activists, mostly women, squatted and raised slogans when the police stopped them from marching to India Gate.

Protestors outside the police headquarters, mostly AAP members, had to be forcibly removed when they refused to budge. Many of them took out a march from the police headquarters at ITO to India Gate, throwing traffic out of gear.

At AIIMS, where the victim is warded, crowds were on the main road outside, raising slogans demanding death to the rapist.

Police have barricaded the main entrance to the hospital to enable easy entry and exit for patients and ambulances.

Doctors earlier removed pieces of candle and a plastic bottle from the girl's vaginal orifice. A doctor treating her admitted he had never before witnessed such brutality committed on a child.

Our PM,Sonia gandhi,Sheila dikshit, digvijay singh etc are people who are insensitive to the pains of the common man. They are incapable of handling any tricky situation in our country. They can just play the dirtiest of politics, pronounce the opposition as communal etc but when it comes to the safety of women and children they are mum or give some meaningless statements.Sonia gandhi says action needs to be taken. we dont know whom she is trying to fool. everyone knows that she is so powerful that not a leaf shakes without her permission in our country. she is very quick when it comes to political vendetta and now she says action needs to be taken. this most corrupt government has failed miserably on all friends, still with their money power they will again come to power and the country will fast slide towards decline and disappear, all courtsey the goons in congress!

When Sonia Gandhi had some illness, she went to US spending millions of taxpayers money.RTI doesnt apply to her case though its not her money! And when 5 yr old is raped, she says action needed. I have heard this from her mouth for many years, just situation changes. If its corruption, she says action needed, if rape in Delhi, she says action needed, if Khap panchayat issue, she says action needed, AND SHE and HER CRONY, MANMOHAN does NOTHING!

Instead of concentrating on the coming elections, Govt. should concentrate on women and female child safety. Elections can wait but not the safety of women and female children.

All in the picture are paid protesters. they are here to gain political mileage. These people are paid by foreign agencies. I have experienced this first hand as I was working in Delhi for 2 years till Jan 2013.

I hate all the politicians because all are corrupt. But I dont support people protesting in front of anyones residence just because they can gain political mileage. Why do they protest in front of Sonia Gandhi's house? Did she write our constitution? Indian police and judiciary system functions according to the Indian constitution and not according to any individual. Protesting in front of anyone's residence will not change our law and functioning of police and judiciary. Instead why not ask the parliament to re-write the Indian constitution.

Our constitution is written more than 50 years back which is not very much effective on current law and order problems. Instead of protesting in front of someone's house why not these so called politicians take this matter to the parliament and do some changes in our constitution.

Simply shouting slogans wont help until u take up the matter on a right platform and address it. only the poor tax payers money is wasted by having such protests and holding the city into ransom.

I would have rather appreciated the protest if it would have been from the individuals and not from people representing any particular party.

Dissolve the parliament and hand over the country to India army and defence forces and then see where India will reach then.

Please pray for the child who has suffered at lot in this small age.

    Where we are heading now.?

Its not possible to think about a rape of 5 year old innocent child.? Why the people became worst than animals.?

May be it is the right time to make prostitution legal in India as atleast people will have an option to satisfy their desire.

Protests will continue for some days and will cool down. People have other things to worry about. But its sad that political parties hijacking issue for their vested interests , and some feminists coming on tv making illogical statements. What happened is very sad , but cannot stopped by amending laws....Its the people mindset have to change , a beast which is starved is always dangerous. Majority of people in india is not media savy and they do not know about law and its teeth. So anyone can strike at first chance without thinking of consequences. Its more of youth , isn't' it. Unemployment , sexual starvation , porn addiction can always drive to these kind of things. So the solution lies in responsible society which can understand criminals mind rather than shouting or protesting on streets. How about , Job for all , a busy mind is always occupied . Second make prostitution legal and easily accessible. Banning of hardcore psychosis ( torture )porn. Banning of drug market ,ethical mindest of peace in need of hour. Believe me , its only ways left.
