Kasargod, May 9: A number of BJP workers, who tried to violate prohibitory orders, break police barricades, and march to Narath in Kannur in a procession, were arrested by the police on Tuesday May 7.

The activists wanted to lead the procession to demand for an in-depth investigation into a recent incident in which bombs and a centre providing training in use of lethal weapons were unearthed at Narath.

The BJP workers, who squatted on the road, raised slogans against the police. General secretary of BJP Kerala state committee, K Surendran, was addressing the workers, when the gathering all of a sudden tried to break the barricades and march ahead.

The police resorted to light caning to disperse the protesters. At this time, a few stones were pelted, but the policemen succeeded in bringing the situation under control. In this respect, the policemen arrested K Surendran and some other leaders.

The procession was meant to pressurize the government to conduct detailed investigation into the finding of bombs and arms training centre in Narath. Popular Front of India, which allegedly was behind running of the said centre, had threatened to block the procession. In view of the mounting tensions, the district collector of Kannur had issued prohibitory orders in the area for a week since Monday.
