Ajman, May 29: The nursing department of GMC Hospital, Ajman in association with Health Communication Division of Gulf Medical University organized a seminar on ‘Vision, innovation and implementation in nursing’. This seminar was held as a part of International Nurses Day celebrations.
Medical experts deliberated on various topics related to the event. Dr Kavita Bhalekar – NMC Hospital, Dubai spoke on the ‘Scope and benefits of nursing informatics’.
She explained in detail about how nursing informatics integrated nursing science, computer and information science, and cognitive science to manage, communicate, and expand the data, information, knowledge, and wisdom of nursing practice. “Nurses trained in NI support improved patient outcomes through their expertise in information processes, structures, and technologies, thus helping nurses and other care providers to create and record the evidence of their practice,” added Dr Kavita Bhalekar.
Dr Meenu Cherian, academic director, GMC Hospital, Ajman, emphasized on the ‘Importance of CME in nursing’.
“Nurses enter the field armed with the knowledge they need to excel at their jobs. However, health care is a changing field with constant new developments. Continuing education prepares nurses for these changes. Although nursing programs are designed to teach new nurses the very latest in health care technology, there are new products coming out each year that the nurses need to understand. For example, many medical facilities are in the process of switching to electronic health records. Nurses who have been in the field more than a few years may require training to learn how to use the new digital patient files and health care software. Continuing education is also necessary for nurses who want to work as an advanced or specialized nurse,” commented Dr Meenu Cherian.
Abhi Thomas Ayoor, department of nursing, GMC hospital spoke on the topic of ‘The future role of nursing in health promotion’.
“In today’s world health promotion plays a key role, for which nurses act as a catalyst. Nursing roles are expanding and developing at a rapidly increasing pace. Nurses must have an evidence-based understanding of the significant effect that can be made through health promotion interventions and communicate this understanding to the public at large. Professional organizations provide an opportunity for nurses to unite in vision and growth for nursing practice and education. Historically, nurses have taught patients how to manage illness; in the future, the focus must be on teaching people how to remain healthy. Many factors will effect nursing in the future. What nurses do, how they are educated, and where they practice will undoubtedly change. Nurses need to embrace the changes and be a part of shaping the future,” said Abhi Thomas Ayoor.
Professor Jayadevan Sreedharan, assistant director - Center for Advanced Biomedical Research and Innovation, GMU lectured in detail on ‘The research methodology for nurses’.
Around 100 nurses from all over UAE participated in the event which was accredited by MoH for 6 CME hours.
