Yavatmal (Maharashtra), Jun 5 (IANS): Congress candidate Nandini Parvekar Wednesday won the Yavatmal assembly seat in Maharashtra, defeating the nearest BJP candidate in a byelection.
Parvekar secured 62,509 votes compared to 47,276 votes of Madan Yerawar (Bharatiya Janata Party), notching a convincing winning margin of over 15,000 votes and retaining the seat for the party.
The by-election was necessitated following the death of Congress member Nilesh Parwekar. The party fielded his widow Nandini.
This was the first time Yavatmal recorded the lowest voting - only 37.50 percent of the voters exercised their franchise June 2.
The poor turnout was attributed to a mix of voter disinterest, the scorching heat, and the celebration of 235 marriages in the town that day.
