Panaji, Jan 16: The state's biggest youth festival 'Yuva Mahotsav 2006' opened at Pilar here over the the past weekend.

Margao, Jan 16: The State Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane inaugurated the two-day 11th ‘Goa Youth Festival 2006’ organized by the Konkani Bhasha Mandal (KBM) and Fr Agnel Family - Pilar, at Jacinto Vaz Nagar, Pilar, on January 14.

KBM, with a view to providing encouragement and platform to the talent of the youth, from every corner of Goa, and to preserve the indigenous art and music, has been organizing the enthusiastic gala event, for last 11 years.

While speaking at the inaugural function, Rane announced to celebrate January 16, the day of Opinion poll at the state level, as the day itself has historical values.

‘The opinion poll preserved the identity of Goa. For that reason, we should not forget the same day, and should celebrate the same day with great enthusiasm. Also we should preserve our Goenkarponn (the Goan entity) with a sense of unity,’’ he said.

Non-Goans get the jobs easily in Goa, but the sons of the soil don’t get. The government should change this situation and should chalk out plans to get Goans employed. Then only Goans would be able to preserve Goenkarponn, said president of KBM Bhiku Bomi Naik, on the occasion.

Goa Youth festival which started from Margao, travelled to rural areas like Nagueshi, Valpoi, Curchorem, Savoiverem, Canacona and this year at Pilar, for past six years.

The festival comprising of various competitive activities like traditional Goan dance, solo singing, street play, Rangoli, jugalbandi of traditional Goan musical instruments, elocution, mime, trio, Konkani pop etc, made the youth to zealously dance to the rhythm of Drums, Ghumat, Dhol and Cymbals (percussions).

The MLA of St Andre constituency and president of reception committee Francis Silveira welcomed all. Prashanti Talpankar and Agnel de Bori compered the inauguration function.

One who wants to see programmes with real enthusiasm, then this is something to be watched. Around 60 groups comprising of altogether 5 thousand-plus youth has participated in this festival.

A lot more entertainment programmes were lined up for Saturday and Sunday.
