Thackeray attacks Amartya Sen for opposing Modi

Mumbai, July 26 (IANS): Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray Friday criticised Nobel laureate Amartya Sen for opposing Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as a prime ministerial candidate.

"Sen is a renowned economist and his comments have clearly delighted Congressmen. But as an economics expert, what exactly has he done for this country?" Thackeray asked in the party mouthpiece Saamana.

He pointed out in an editorial that India's economy was in shambles, inflation had reached explosive proportions and poverty had increased in the country.

"For all this, (Narendra) Modi is not responsible. But despite bagging a Nobel prize in economics, (Amartya) Sen has no solution for the country's economic mess," Thackeray said.

Thackeray advised Sen to first do his work properly before poking his nose in politics.

In the same breath, he also attacked Bharatiya Janata Party MP Chandan Mitra for demanding that Sen should return the Bharat Ratna.

"There is no doubt that Sen is a respected economist and he deserved the honours. But it is not right on some persons to demand the Bharat Ratna back from him. Everybody should stay within their limits," Thackeray said.

THIS IS INFORMATION I RECEIVED FROM SOME 'OLD' MUMBAI RESIDENTS. THERE WAS A PERIOD SOMETIME IN THE PAST IN 'BOMBAY' WHEN THE SHIV SENA WERE AGAINST SOUTH INDIANS INCLUDING UDUPI HOTELIERS AND WERE ACTIVELY PURSUING A PROPAGANDA OF DRIVING SOUTH INDIANS OUT OF 'BOMBAY' UNDER THE SLOGAN 'LUNGI HATAO'. TODAY THEY ARE CARRYING OUT A SIMILAR THING AGAINST NORTH INDIANS FROM UP AND BIHAR.

Any person without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex is eligible for Bharat Ratna award. After consulting with all the parties the recommendation is made by the Prime Minister to the President of India. There was no formal provision that recipients of the Bharat Ratna should be Indian citizens. Of the 41 awards so far, there has been one award to a naturalised Indian citizen, Mother Teresa (1980), and to two non-Indians, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (1987) and Nelson Mandela (1990).
In democratic India, the right to freedom in Article 19 of Indian Constitution guarantees the Freedom of speech and expression, and then who are Chandan Mitra and Uddhav Thackeray to limit Mr. Sen’s freedom of expression. Does the BJP believe in the freedom of speech or not? Are people not entitled to express their views? Have you heard of taking away the top national award given to a person for political reason? How cheap it is to make such demand by the BJP supporters.

BOTH THOKARAY AND MODI ARE ANTI-NATIONALISTS. BOTH DO NOT RESPECT INDIAN CONSTITUTION !

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO - MODI IS ANTI MINORITIES OR HAS NO RESPECT FOR HUMAN VALUES, AND THOKARAY HAS NO RESPECT FOR INDIAN CITIZENS IN MAHARASTRA/BOMBAY !

IN OTHER WORDS BOTH ARE DIFFERENT FACES OF THE SAME COIN.
