KonCANi 2006 press release

Hamilton (Ontario), Jan 28: Preparations are under way for the KonCANi 2006 convention to be held in July 2006, says convention president Ashok Bhatt in a press release.

There are approximately 6,000 to 8,000 people of the community living in North America. This is a close-knit community with strong family ties and a sense of pride in the language, culture, heritage and arts.

Since 1996, the community has been hosting large-scale Konkani conventions every two years in major centres of North America, which are usually attended by 1,500 or more delegates from all over North America, India and Europe.

The conventions are held every two years, the first-ever having been held in 1996 in New Jersey. Thereafter they were held in the following cities.

1998 San Francisco
2000 Chicago
2002 Houston
2004 Los Angeles

The Canadian Konkanis are the hosts for 2006 convention to be held in the Hamilton Convention Centre. This event, being held the first time outside the US, is expected to draw about 2,000 delegates.

The organizers have invited all Konkanis from around the world to join them and be part of the celebration. Ashok Bhatt has gratefully recalled the vital information about daijiworld.com and its wide reach among the Konkanis all across the world, which was provided by Dr Vittal Prabhu, who is an associate professor at Penn State University.
