2,754 Maharashtra jailbirds jump parole


Mumbai, July 31 (IANS): A whopping 2,697 inmates from Mumbai jails who are out on bail have gone missing, Home Minister R.R. Patil said here Wednesday.

Another 57 released from Yerawada Central Jail, Pune, have also jumped parole, Patil said in a written reply in the assembly to questions by Bharatiya Janata Party member Girish Bapat and other legislators.

Till last month, 2,697 inmates were missing and were yet to be re-arrested, while Pune's 57 inmates are missing since the past decade, totalling to 2,754 absconders so far.
