Thrashed in assembly, Mumbai cop transferred

Mumbai, Aug 9 (IANS): In an abrupt move, the Maharashtra government has transferred a traffic police sub-inspector who was assaulted by some legislators inside the assembly in March to a non-field post in Sangli, an official said here Friday.

A police officer said Sachin Suryawanshi's "transfer was routine and made on a request" by him, who has been ordered to report to the Police Training Centre, Sangli.

Suryawanshi was assaulted by a few legislators inside the legislature premises March 19, a day after he stopped and penalized Bahujan Vikas Aghadi legislator Kshitij Thakur for speeding on the Rajiv Gandhi Bandra-Worli Sea Link in March.

Following a breach of privilege motion against him, Suryawanshi was suspended, but it was revoked in July and he was reinstated.

Legislators Thakur and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's Ram Kadam, the prime accused in the incident, were arrested for the assault on Suryawanshi and were suspended from the legislature.

Their suspension was revoked by the assembly last month.

Though Suryawanshi has been ordered to report within 24 hours to Sangli in south-west Maharashtra, officials said that he was likely to take up his new assignment only after the ongoing assault probe is completed.
