Deeply pained at submarine's loss: PM

New Delhi, Aug 15 (IANS): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday expressed "deep pain" on the loss of INS Sindurakshak, saying that 18 sailors are feared to have lost their lives when the submarine sank.

"We are also deeply pained that we lost the submarine, INS Sindurakshak in an accident yesterday," the prime minister said from the ramparts of the Red Fort in his Independence Day address to the nation.

INS Sindhurakshak sank in Mumbai's Naval Dockyard Wednesday morning after a massive explosion and fire. While some sailors managed to jump to safety, 18 were feared trapped within the vessel.

"Eighteen brave sailors are feared to have lost their lives. The accident is all the more painful becasue the Navy had recently achieved two major successes in the form of its first nuclear submarine, INS Arihant and the (indigenous) aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant.

"We pay homage to the brave hearts we have lost. We also congratulate the Navy on its successes," the prime minister added.

    Heartfelt condolence to the bereaved families.

    India bought more military equipments from the former USSR due to the military alliance as well the better terms to buy them. How many Russian-made MIG 21 have crashed so far and killed the pilots and people on the ground? This submarine is an old Russian built, recently refinished. Human lives are lost and the their families are pushed into eternal tears!

    Mr. Pm , not seen any pain in your speech because written by somebody and you only read. you feel the pain only when you meet the family of those brave soldiers. your party or you will never do that or try to assist their families. so donot shed crocodile tears.

    Something seems to be fishy about this submarine blast. Poor sailors lost their lives in the incident.

    Dear PM,
    Please set aside the 'deep pains, moanings and groanings', and initiate a high level of enquiry. A submarine with advanced safety gadgets cannot explode like a toy baloon unless it is a sabotage by our enemy jealous of our progress. The death of 18 sailors gives the impression that all possibilities of detections and enquiries were successfully eliminated.
