Speeding train kills 12 people in Bihar

Train runs over 35 devotees, mob attacks train driver

Khagaria (Bihar), Aug 19 (PTI) :
A speeding express train ran over devotees waiting on tracks to stop it, leaving 35 persons dead and triggering angry protests by locals who attacked the train driver and set afire its coach besides engine of another train at Dhamara Ghat Station in Khagaria district today.

The 'kanwarias' (devotees of Lord Shiva) were on the tracks after alighting from the Samastipur-Saharsa passenger when they were run over by the Saharsa-Patna Rajyarani Express travelling at 80 kmph, officials said.

Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Law and Order S K Bharadwaj told PTI that 35 pilgrims were killed.

A senior railway official also said that the toll could be around 35, but refused to be quoted.

Railway Board Chairman Arunendra Kumar said the train was not supposed to halt at Dhamara Ghat and was given clearance to pass through the area but the devotees were on the tracks thinking they could stop the train.

Though the driver applied emergency brakes, it was too late by then, he said, adding an internal inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

The pilgrims were going to nearby Katyani Sthan temple to offer 'jalabhishek' to Lord Shiva on the fourth and final Monday of the holy month of Shrawan when the mishap took place.

Soon after the accident, local people attacked the train driver.

Superintendent of Police S K Jha told PTI over phone that the engine of the Samastipur-Saharsa passenger train and an AC coach of Saharsa-Patna Rajyarani Express were set on fire by the enraged locals.

The two drivers of the express train, Rajaram Paswan and Sushil Kumar Suman, were traceless and their mobile phones switched off, ECR CPRO Amitabh Prabhakar said.

However, the Railway Board Chairman said the driver was safe without specifying.

He said it was a case of trespassing as the pilgrims were illegally trying to cross the tracks.

Minister of state for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that the express was travelling at a speed of 80 km per hour when the accident occurred.

He said although relief trains carrying doctors and nurses were sent from Saharsha and Barauni, they could not reach the spot as the law and order situation there was not conducive because of protests by angry people.

Khagaria, Aug 19 (PTI): At least 12 people, most of them pilgrims, were crushed to death under the wheels of Saharsa-Patna Rajya Rani Express at Bhamara Railway Station in Bihar on Monday morning.

The victims, mostly kanwarias (devotees of Lord Shiva), were standing on the railway tracks at the station when the Rajrani Express hit them at the station under Samastipur division of East Central Raiway.

At least 12 of them died on the spot after being run over by the speeding train, officials said.

Bhamara station where the accident took place falls in between Saharsa-Mansi section of Samastipur division.

Local passengers threw stones at Rajrani Express which stopped after a distance following the accident.

We Indians are like this. We believe in hooligonism, roudism, blind faith, mobocracy, ticketless travel in trains, never honour rules and regulations, move always against traffic rules, always get cranky on religious sentiments, never hygenic, spit, $#it, urinate everywhere and anywhere and we have leaders and parties taking advantage and confirming and promoting their behaviours, perhaps even BRAHMA cannot correct the situation in India in his own time.

By walking across an express track & expecting the express train to stop, these people were asking for it. But the poor driver had to pay with his life. I agree with the person who said, "another express train should have ploughed the hooligans".

Its really a tragedy. But whose fault is this? If people walk on railway tracks like sheeps how can the train driver control the speed? The people should have come to the track side after listening rhe sound of speeding train. And now the people have set fire the train causing loss to national wealth. The poor driver also had been attacked why?

Feel sorry for the family of these people who were brainless to imagine an express train can be stopped like a car suddenly. It would teach a lesson for future idiots.Railways should cancel all trains to the areas where local people burn the trains as they do not deserve these facilities and tax payers money should not be spent subsidising them by paying for new carriages.

They thought that their Power of Bhakti can stop the Speeding Train, as they have been seeing in Indian movies and TV serials or Spider-Man Super-Man Hollywood films. So, they were standing in the middle of the track fearlessly. It is the mistake of that dumb Express Train Driver that he could not feel the power of their fierce Bhakti ka Shakti.

During the time when Laloo was Railway Minister all the Railway jobs in South India & Maharashtra were captured by Biharis by bribing Laloos Agents.
So, now we are afraid whether similar accidents will take place even in South India & Maharashtra under Bihari Railway employees.

Under the Railway Act no passengers are allowed to trespass on its properties. The incident here indicates that the devotees intentionally trespassed on railway property. Furthermore it is totally weird and whimsical on their part to have carried out such a moron strategy. Several questions need to be asked ... wasn't there a security to avoid this catastrophe, or alternative route for them to take? Such a situation wouldn't have taken place if the surrounding of the railway property was thoroughly barricaded. Was this the only route and was it necessary for the devotees to proceed to their destination? Considering themselves as devotees they must have expected some magic to take place and the train automatically stopping when seeing them. It is sheer common sense that a huge train of great magnitude is next to impossible to stop .. even if an emergency brake is applied during motion with a pay speed of over 100 kmph. It can't stop within a few kilometers, leave aside avoiding any eventually / casualty. Forceful application of instant brakes to avoid any catastrophe would severely jolt the train leading to derailment and somersaulting (overturning) resulting in great loss of precious lives due to the impact created when the wheels skids forcefully on the rails. This in turn would lead to a violent jerk and subsequent overturning. The worse nightmare for devotees who missed death by a whisker would now be being penalized as trespassers under the Railway Act and its repercussions / after effects would tell upon them all through their lives. Lastly, the families of those dead will have to pay for damages caused to railway property, be it directly or indirectly alongwith all other penalties that may be deemed fit by the Railway Ministry.

I had only seen people blocking road in Bendi Bazar Mumbai, and praying on the middle of the road, expecting all traffic to stop till they finish. However this is the first case where we see people expecting a train to stop just because they are crossing the tracks....for a good cause ? Assault on driver and public property shows the extent of stupidity .

Due to great favour done by British the Bihar & U.P.states are criss-crossed with Railway Lines. Even then the Railway dept runs in loss due to the fact that 50% of the Passengers in Bihar-Up-Jharkhand-Chattisgarh travel without ticket on the roof of the Trains.
Instead of UP-Bihar-Jharkhand, had those British people done same favour to Karnataka then Kannadigas would have been much obliged and would have never traveled without ticket.

Shocking tragedy indeed! What I understand from the news channels is that the pilgrims were crossing the track after getting down from a slow train. If this is true, then sadly the deceased themselves are to be blamed for their death and not the driver nor the station authorities. May their soul rest in peace.

A multiple tragedy compounded by mindless violence of a mob killing the driver. Why were these persons standing on the track for 'boarding another train'? Was there no platform? Why did the staff at the station not prevent them or warn them of the approaching fast train? How can the poor driver be faulted?

That’s because, people were trespassers. When tracks were laid it is for rail. It is strictly announced that people must not stand near rail tracks. It is not possible to put brakes like car or scooters. It was a fast train result so much causality. People burned the train. Who is the losers???? We Public i.e. tax payers. Government may build same type of train from Tax payers money… So fools when you are burning public property please think twice
