Karkala: Devraj Urs was a hope of backward classes – MLA Sunil Kumar

Karkal, Aug 21: "The late D Devraj Urs , hope of the backward classes was a unique politician.  He was responsible for approving government based reservation and old age pension for widows and is regarded for being compassionate towards the downtrodden in the society," said MLA Sunil Kumar.

He was speaking after inaugurating and presiding over 98th birth anniversary programme of late Devraj Urs held under the joint aegis of Udupi Zilla Panchayat, Karkala Taluk Panchayat and backward classes welfare department at Karkal taluk panchayat hall recently.

Devraj Urs had united 45% of groups of backward classes besides conducting social welfare programmes for them.  He had passed a law that one who plows is the owner of the land and had become the savior of the poor.

Ramachandra Nellikaru, principal of K M E S pre University College, gave a lecture on Devaraj Urs’s individuality and performance.  He said that he upheld human values, passed Bhoomasudhe and banned the system of slavery.  He was not only a human being but a great force, he said.

Udupi zilla panchayat social justice committee president Udaya S Kotian, Taluk panchayat president Rashmi Shetty, Taluk panchayat social justice committee president Praven Salian, former Taluk Panchayat Vice president Ravindra Kumar, Taluk Panchayat administration official Chinnappa Moily and Excise department official Madhava were present at the dais.
