Photojournalist gangraped in Mumbai

Mumbai, August 23 (PTI): In a ghastly incident, a woman photojournalist was allegedly gangraped by five men in Parel area in central Mumbai on Thursday night, police said.

The incident took place at around 8 p.m. near Shakti Mills in Lower Parel area when the 23-year-old woman, working with an English magazine, was on an assignment, doing a story on ‘chawl’, they said.

She was accompanied by a male friend.

Drawing a similarity with the infamous December 16 gangrape case in Delhi, the men tied up the victim’s friend and raped the woman.

The victim has been admitted to Jaslok Hospital.

Preliminary reports suggested that she has sustained multiple internal injuries, police said.

Dr Taran Gyanchandani, acting CEO of the hospital, said, “We are doing the needful...she is under strict observation. At the moment we can’t say anything.”

A gangrape case has been registered in N M Joshi Marg police station.

The statement of the victim’s friend has been recorded and sketches of the culprits are being prepared, police said.

They claimed the victim has identified two of the accused by their names. The girl told police that two of them were calling each other as Rupesh and Sajid, they said, adding that some drug addicts have been picked up from the area for questioning.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil visited the victim at Jaslok hospital.

“This is a very serious matter. We have taken note of it. The accused will be arrested soon,” Mr. Patil told reporters outside the hospital.

He said Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh has been directed to ensure that the culprits are arrested soon.

In a statement given to police, the girl said the five goons were present in the Shakti Mills compound. They started making lewd remarks and harassed her. When her friend intervened, two of them assaulted him. Three others took the woman inside the dilapidated structure and raped her.

No political parties can change human mind and lust of people unless a deterrent punishment is meted out to the criminals. Our judicial system is so slow and complicated the criminals go scotfree in the end on flimsy ground.

Now I feel the rape, rapes, gang rapes, sexual assaults have become a part of INDIAN CULTURE..

Every news paper today carries minimum 3 - 4 columns of rapes and sexual assults..

Even the foreign tourists are not spared..!! Michaela Cross,a US student rightly says "India a traveller's heaven, a woman's hell" after her personal experience in India..

But our Saffron friends.. the so called Protectors of Indian Culture just discard it saying the Influence of Western culture.. Well.. what is the Indian Culture then?? They are more interested in the safety of Cows & Buffaloes than the Humans around..

It's not Western or Eastern Culture.. its how you take it and apply it..!!

I used to be PROUD to be INDIAN...
    But at present scenario
    Am ASHAMED to be INDIAN..!!
    GOD SAVE INDIA

commentors give so many comments, recommedations, suggestions. But unfortunately I just see that it just puts our frustration by seeing all these non sense. Nobody looks at seriously and work on. the daily crimes like rape instances, accidents are evidencing this. Whole public community says something but practically something else will be continued. Accused will escape easily. If found gulity also they can enjoy life for many more years. Byt the time virdict comes they will be old enough to accept it any ways. Sad to see all these.

All the rapists while doing the crime think that they would simply get away and not going to face a big issue.

I think if proved, the guilty should receive no short of death penalty, a sentence prevailing in some Islamic countries. Again this punishment is not going to completely eliminate the crime, but certainly will bring radical changes in the number of rapes and murders.

These rapists should be shot dead and i would recommend that all these characters who are finally caught should be let loose before an angry mob and let the justice be meted out in the streets. We have long crossed that stage where we could term our society as civilised one.

Is the anti-sexual harrassment law in force in India. Then why such incidents are happening every day. Catch them and hang them. There should not be any mercy. It's because of the sleepy nature of the authorities that such incidents are happening on a daily basis. Let the law be implemented mercilessly and see how it comes to control. Nobody should dare do such things. I think our country also should implement Iranian and Saudi Arabian law in such cases .

main reason for rape is useless politician.

politician's are only worried about new project,

why politicians are not worried about gang rape?
because politicians family protect with police and black commandos.

politician will not change law until rapist don't rape.....

as a indian I request all the political party pls. stop internal fight, as soon as possible change the rape law.

all rapist must get 200 lashes from victim or victims family members.

all rapist must get punishment with 30 days time.

all convicted rapist should not give any 'no bail"

all above 14 years rapist must get same punishment which other will get.

finally all rapist should be hanged within one year time.

" pls. don't show any mercy for
    rapist is cancer for society."

dear all political party if u try u can stop gang rape within one month.

before rapist catch ur own family member pls. change law.

I bet if u take above action within one month 99% gang rape and acid attack will stop.

first pls. stop wasting important time in parliament. use at least some time for change rape law.
God will bless u and ur family.

if u don't try to change law.
then one day rapist will reach ur house also. then automatic law will change.

Very sad to hear these kind of incidents happening..in our country.

It seems there is no impact on democratic laws to change their reforms..even after delhi rape!!very shameful to those lawmakers, who couldn't make any changes to rape law, with rapists on loose..

God!,Please save the human race from turning to monster's!!

Let there be strict laws implemented with immmediate action'
