Mumbai, Aug 23: The 79th foundation day of the GSB Sabha was recently celebrated at Little Angels School at Sion, here.
Rekha and U R Mallya, senior vice president of Jet Airways Ltd were the chief guests for the occasion.
Gurpur Dattananda Bhat was the special guest for the event, whose recent generous donation, in loving memory of his wife Late Shanta D Bhat, enabled the Sabha to start a medical welfare scheme for the senior citizens from the economically weaker sections of the community.
The programme began with invocations offered by the Mahila Shakha Bhajan group of the Sabha.
The president, Sudha G Pai, welcomed the audience and gave them an update of the various programmes and charitable initiatives held by the Sabha. This was followed by a felicitation programme for the sponsors of this event.
Students from the community who had excelled in academic studies from SSC onwards were awarded silver medals and certificates, sponsored by Jayashree Ramesh Shenoy. Cash prizes from various endowments were also awarded.
The V R Shenoy Memorial Vidyanidhi Merit Award was awarded to the toppers from class first to ninth from the beneficiaries of the Vidyanidhi Fund for 2011-2012 whereas in the previous year, the award was sponsored by B T Mallya.
The Promising Talent Award, sponsored by B T Mallya, was awarded to the following children based on their drawing contributions to Voice of GSB, the quarterly newsletter of the Sabha. The awarded children were Purushottam Shenoy, Gargi Pai, Sneha Shenoy, Nitya Nayak, Omkar Hegde and Akansha Pai.
Anuradha Kamath and Ramesh Bhandarkar were felicitated as the winners of the senior citizen female and male health check-up cum contest conducted for the Sabha members, by the GSB medical trust.
In his speech, the chief guest, U R Mallya, praised the efforts of the Sabha in conducting several activities which addressed the needs of various sections of the community. He also guided the students on achieving effectiveness in their professional and personal lives.
The entertainment programme was sponsored by Late Varada Kamath, and performances were put up by Anvita Kamath, Seema Shenai, Archana Anup Hegdekar and Soumya Shenoy.
The programme concluded with the singing of the National Anthem and refreshments were sponsored by Nagesh Rama Nayak’s ‘Café Mysore’.
Bina Shenoy introduced the chief guest and S D Shenoy announced sponsor felicitations.
Educational awards announcements were made by Laxmikant Prabhu and Mohini Hegde. Vidya Bhat announced the Promising Talent Award winners. Bharat Kini proposed a vote of thanks speech. Uday Malya compered the programme.
Members Sarvashri S C Pai, K R Bhakta, Dinesh Bhandarkar and Ananthray Nayak also helped in organizing the programme.
