Karkala, Aug 23: “The government department alone is unable to check contagious diseases in the growing city. Along with the development of the city, diseases such as dengue and malaria are knocking at our doors and it is not enough if the department creates awareness.  The campaign will be effective only if local groups join hands with them,” said MLA V Sunil Kumar.

He was speaking after inaugurating a campaign against diseases that are being spread by mosquitoes held under the joint aegis of Sri Kshetra Dharmastala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP), Karkala Taluk health department, Karkala Municipality, women’s awareness programme, Alva’s Nursing, Pragatibandhu Self-Help Group, and Rotaract club.

He said that of the 139 cases of such diseases found in the taluk, Karkala was witness to 73 of them. 

Planning officer of SKDRDP Muralidhar H L welcomed the gathering and gave the keynote address.

SKDRDP director Dugge Gowda presided over the function.  Taluk health officer Dr Krishnananda Shetty was the resource person.  Chief officer of the municipality Gopalkrishna Shetty, Karkala Taluk government hospital’s chief medical officer Dr Jnanesh Kamath, Rotaract club president Ganesh Salian, and regional president Vidyananda Shettigar were present on the dais.
