Sonia confident of UPA's return to power again, rules out early polls

New Delhi, Aug 24 (Agencies) : Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday expressed confidence that the United Progressive Alliance would win the 2014 elections, and virtually ruled out early Lok Sabha polls.

Talking informally to media people after the inauguration of National Media Centre in New Delhi, Gandhi also expressed hope that the food security bill will be passed in the monsoon session of parliament.

Asked if UPA-III (United Progressive Alliance-III) will be a reality, she said: "Certainly. 100 per cent......obviously so many rights we have given. It is our right to information, right to education and now right to food is our USP", she said when asked about the possibility of UPA coming back to power and what was the USP on which the elections will be fought.

To a question about the possibility of early general elections, she said: "Our aim is to go till the end (of the government's tenure)."

Asked about the food security bill which is pending despite government efforts for its passage, Gandhi said: "We are hopeful it will be passed."

The United Progressive Alliance government, now in its second term, has been facing intense criticism from the opposition on issues related price rise, the falling value of the rupee and corruption.

The term of the UPA-II government will end in May next year.

Gandhi also expressed concern and anguish over the gruesome gang-rape of the 22-year-old photojournalist in Mumbai two days ago.

"It is a heinous crime...It should not have happened," Gandhi said, while interacting with reporters.

I have received a comm from some friends from US asking for participation(volunteering) in mission 2014 to help Modi become PM. Its all propaganda by NRIs who care less for the country but bent upon to project a man who is not fit for the betterment of country. Through this site I want to request supporters of Cong to rise to the need to defeat communal forces as PM-MMS said few days back. People have started judging the mood by agree or disagree on comments on TOI/NDTV articles about UPA or BJP/Modi. We do not support corruption, but corruption was always there whether it is NDA or UPA, only difference is the people have Right To Info. So without being misguided we should support cong for peaceful India and reject the divisive forces. No godse please.......check the site - www.pheku.in to have idea about lies of the guy.

I do not wish UPA to win 2014 considering corruption, mismanagement and mis-governance.

But i will not be surprised to see Manmohan singh again( or some other robot) as congress knows the art of winning very well than other parties.

RTI/RTE and now food security will change the face of this country. Imagine a program which is taking care of food for 600 million !!!does not matter what people talk and how muhc it is costing all tax payers should think they are doing some charity work for the poor and feed their fellow countrymen. All parties are scared and worried that once this is implemented UPA III is guaranteed. NDA did a great job for five years 2000 -2004 and thats is the reason they lost the elections and parliament was attacked and MR advani the iron man released the terroists in the kandhamal plane hijack!!! we all know how this great man saved 15000 gujjus in one day i am sure he can make us rich overnite !!!or atleast feel we are rich

It is obvious that majority of readers of Daijiworld are Congress supporters. Unfortunately, this means most prefer high-levels of corruption and complete disregard for rule of law - Robert Vadra's shameless loot of India supported by his mother-in-law should made any real Indian cringe. I dont know if NaMo is the answer, but surely this Govt lead by Mute MMS (worst PM) is not the answer. All real patriotic Indians will vote out this Congress party.

Sorry friend. People here support the Congress not because they support Corruption. We detest corruption but the BJP/Sangh Parivar is not a better replacement/option with its hidden communal agenda and their own understanding of Hindutva which includes Babri masjid demolition, moral policing etc.. Further, the BJP are not spotlessly clean when it comes to corruption. When they come to power they will not be much different. Anyway examples of Yeddy, Reddys, Gadkari are there to speak of BJP corruption. God knows how many more still are undiscovered.

People wish to live in peace first without the fear of being discriminated, harassed and/or attacked because of their religion. I dont think you are able to understand this. Corruption, we believe is the lesser of the two evils as we have seen and experienced the venom of Communalism in Society.

You seem to be only 'partly' with Lobo when it comes to favouring a single 'national' level party over a coalition with smaller parties. However, unlike Lobo you have not specifically said that you support the Congress. Therefore, it seems you could be a BJP supporter so how can you say you are 'totally' with Lobo ?

Soniaji, undoubtedly you are the back bone of India. However, your team, including your son-in-law is a curse to Congress and to India. If at all BJP was secular, Congress would have gone to drain. Luckily, BJP has chosen a wrong PM candidate which is certainly helpful for Congress to win. BJP, under the senseless advise of RSS choosing Feku as a tall leader has dug its own grave & paved the way towards success for Congress. I was a strong supporter of Congress, but, lately, due to corruption and scams I am very much disappointed. However, have no choice but to opt for corruption against communalism. Wish BJP was secular & instead of mass murderer, any other leader was PM candidate. Jai Hind.

For Sonia, there is no option she has to get UPA into power again. If any other party comes to power, especially BJP, they will pull out all the ghosts from her corruption bag! She tasted corruption money with her Italian counterparts on BOFORS, now again Italian based FINMECHANICA! Son in law's illegal land grabbing on another side, Sonia faces corruption charges pointing directly at her. UPA is not acting on bringing back black money from Switzerland only because Sonia will be main loser! However we haven't heard anything about Rahul Gandhi. probably he must be sole shoulder to carry on the good things Mrs. Indira Gandhi had started.

The Congress is experienced Political player. All they want to prove thier achievement is by different kind of acts like information or food. Once it pass in the parliament by the end of this year, they will bring the Rupee value around 55 against dollar in Feb and reduce the oil prices and other necessary comodity prices too and prepare themselves for the general elections. Now the depreciation of Rupee is a political game. Just wait and watch. BJP know about this and making different ways to get voters attractions but at the end of the day Congress will be the winner.

INC has 206 in LS. It might not corss 100 this time. Looks like Karnataka is the state which might help INC a bit by giving 15-16 seats and this would be INC'c highest seats ever from any state. BJP would definitely increase its strenght and may reach around 175 or so. Rest all goes to regional parties and 2014 would be disaster for India.
