Chandigarh, Aug 28 (IANS): Despite its not so successful run in New Delhi, the Punjab government plans to implement the Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) in major cities in Punjab, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal announced Wednesday.
Badal, who is visiting Dubai and Istanbul (Turkey) these days, said in a statement that major cities Ludhiana and Amritsar will be the first ones to have the BRTS.
Accompanied by a team of officers from Punjab, Badal took a ride on the BRTS in Istanbul Tuesday. The BRTS transports over 750,000 people in Istanbul everyday.
Badal said the government has studied the possibilities of BRTS for Punjab and it would be introduced in Amritsar and Ludhiana in its first phase. It will be implemented in the next two years.
Badal said the Punjab government had studied the failed BRTS model of Delhi and were aware of its shortcomings.
