Alert Kolkata Metro staff foil woman's suicide bid


Kolkata, Aug 30 (IANS): Alert Kolkata Metro Railway staff saved the life of a middle-aged woman, who was attempting to commit suicide at the Kalighat station Friday, an official said.

The woman, aged about 43 years, was caught when she was trying to take her own life by jumping onto the tracks in front of a train coming from Dum Dum.

"When she was caught, she tried to run across the platform and tried to get out of the Metro station. Later, she was interrogated by the duty station manager and revealed her identity," said Kolkata Metro deputy general manager Protyush Ghosh.

The woman's relatives were contacted. She was handed over to Kalighat Police Station.

As many as nine suicide attempts were recorded this year till Friday, and on eight such occasions, the Metro Railway Authorities managed to thwart the bids, said Ghosh.
