Three climbers fall to death in Italy

Italy, Sep 3 (IANS/AKI): Three climbers were killed in the Dolomites mountain range in Italy when they lost their footing and fell 300 metres down a mountain slope, witnesses said.

The tragedy took place Monday on Monte Pana near Comici. The identities of the climbers were not known. Mountain rescue teams worked to reach the victims on a helicopter.

Rescuers in July recovered the corpses of two experienced and well-equipped Italian climbers who went missing in the Alps in northwest Italy.

The pair were believe to have slipped in deep snow and fallen after giving up an attempt to reach the summit of the 3,600 metre-high Gran Paradiso mountain.

Rescue teams from the Valle d'Aosta region in August found the bodies of two climbers who went missing on Mont Blanc in the Italian Alps in August. They were identified as a Swiss climber and a French guide, respectively.
