Russian nuclear power official visits Kudankulam

Chennai, Sep 5 (IANS): A top official of Russian nuclear power company NIAEP-ASE (AtomStroyExport) visited Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) and met officials of his company working at the site.

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) official, not wanting to be named, told IANS that Valery I. Limarenko, president, AtomStroyExport, visited KNPP and met officials of his company Wednesday.

India's atomic power plant operator NPCIL is setting up two 1,000-MW Russian reactors at Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, around 650 km from here.

AtomStroyExport is setting up KNPP and the first unit began fission process in July this year.

AtomStroyExport has a share of around 30 percent in the global market of engineering and construction of nuclear power plants.

Currently, the company's stock of orders is 20 nuclear power plants being designed or built in Russia and abroad.

NPCIL officials earlier said the first unit would start generating around 500 MW and would be synchronised with the power grid August end, but that has not happened.

Officials now say the unit would be synchronised with the grid sometime this month.
