Udupi, Sep 12: A horticulture worker who had come to work at UPCL as a contract laborer killed one of his colleague named Sharanappa who hails from Basavapattana in Gangavathi, in a drunken stupor by smashing his skull with a stone on August 25 midnight.

In connection to the case, police have arrested Basappa Durgappa alias Basayya alias Basu (40) from Belgaum. He was produced before Udupi district court on Wednesday.

Sharanappa and Basappa on August 25 night under drunken stupor had an argument over cooking food. Later the argument turned into a fight and finally Basappa with the help of another person in the room killed Sharanappa by smashing his skull with a stone.

After which the accused fled from the spot without leaving any evidence. They even took the victim’s mobile phone and Rs 2,000 cash.

Four teams to tackle the case

In order to catch the accused, four police teams were formed. Initially the police collected the identity details of the accused and planned to make the arrest.

Even after UPCL horticulture contractor Dennis D’Souza did not collect any details of these workers, the police were successful in arresting them.

With the help of mobile technology, the arrest was made. Another main accused Sangayya is absconding and the search is on to trace him.

Under the guidance of Udupi SP Borlingayya, Karkala DySP Jayanath Shetty, probationary DySP Savitha Hogaar and Kaup circle inspector Shivanand Valekar, the police team who were part of the investigation are Padubidri inspector Azmath Ali, Kaup- Padubidri police officials Suresh, Prashanth, Rajesh and Sudhakar.
