New Delhi, Feb 21: United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Oman have imposed a ban on Indian poultry products after cases of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu were reported from Maharashtra.
Although the move is a precautionary one, the ban on poultry imports will not be significant for the countries since only eggs are imported from India.
Market sources said that the local market needs can be met by eggs produced locally and those imported from Saudi Arabia and Oman.
Bahrain has also imposed ban on bird imports from several countries as a preventive measure, said Municipalities and Agriculture Ministry's Animal Resources Director, Dr Salman Abdulnabi.
In Oman, Sheikh Salim bin Hilal Al Khalili, Agriculture and Fisheries minister, has banned import of live pet and wild birds, their products, derivatives and waste from India and several other countries.
