Mysore, Feb 28: A new-born baby wrapped in paper was found abandoned in the train that arrived here from Tirupathi today.
It was discovered by Lakshamma, one of the train-cleaning crew below the seat in one of the compartments after the train came to a halt at 10.45 this morning. The child is learnt to be two-days young.
After being informed, the Railway Police came on the platform when Lakshamma, who had taken charge of the abandoned child, told them that she would be its guardian.
In the meanwhile, former Union Minister V. Sreenivasa Prasad, who was present at the Railway Station, on learning about Lakshamma's kind gesture, presented her with Rs. 500 in cash for meeting the immediate needs of the child.
After Lakshamma revealed that already three grandchildren of hers were in her care, Odanadi, a city-based NGO working for the cause of needy persons, particularly women and children, were called in.
Listening to the advice of some elders among the onlookers, Lakshamma agreed to abide by their advice of handing over the child to the care of the NGO.
A large crowd had gathered at the spot curious to know how things would proceed.
